a few weeks ago I posted about the lady I saw walking in the neighborhood near my office, the one with the platinum beehive hairdo, the one who looked like she'd be more at home standing next to Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Winokur than wandering around the financial district. turns out, it wasn't a costume -- the lady actually works for my company, I've seen her in the elevator a few times.
yesterday I saw another weird sight, this time on the subway. it was 130 in the afternoon. the guy must have been in his late 50's. he was wearing jeans and a patriotic t shirt. his gray hair was all mussed. he was carrying several plastic shopping bags, the kind you get from the supermarket, but it looked as if the bags had been used several times. he got onto the subway and sat down next to a well-dressed woman. she immediately got up and went to stand near the door. next thing I knew, he was taking a paper bag out of one of the plastic bags, and there was a bottle inside the paper bag. he took a long drink, then put the bottle away. but what happened next is what blew me away. he reached into the bag again and took out a package of "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter." he opened tha package, unwrapped one of the sticks of "butter" and began eating it!
later I was walking through Chelsea and saw a strange looking couple. actually, she wasn't strange, just a bit Goth -- black hiphuggers, black button down shirt, her hair tucked into a black cap. but he...well, he was wearing trousers in a color I can only think of as "dusty rose", and pale green jacket, and a black fedora on his head. and all I could think of was "A Clockwork Orange."
