I'm flying to WDW on May 21, returning May 25th.

My drivers license expires May 23rd.

The earliest I can renew the license is tomorrow due to having LASIK surgery in January, and had to have the eye doctors OK that my eyes are stable and I don't need corrective lenses.

That happened yesterday, and the dilation should be totally gone by in the morning.

My worry is that my permanent license won't be in the mail in time for the trip. They say it could take 4-6 weeks for it to arrive.

So should I go ahead and get it renewed tomorrow and take a chance on flying with the paper temporary license, or wait until after my trip.

Does the ID have to be current to use it to fly??

Thanks,

Carol

I would renew it now. Many TSA agents are very picky about it being a valid drivers license. I had a friend try to travel with an outdated license and they gave her a lot of grief, extra screening before she could leave the area. It may not happen to you but plan for lots of extra time if you try to travel with an expired license.

Even though they can see that it is you when you have a photo ID my friend still had lots of problems trying to get through security.

What happened to me was that when I went in and got my paper temporary license, they stapled it to my current license. I did not have any problems flying with this arrangement.

I should also note that a drivers license is not required to fly. I believe the requirement is "Government Issued Photo ID". So, if you have a public library card with your picture on it, that would be acceptable. I've heard of people flying with a non-govt issued ID (sams club card or something similar), but I'd stick to the govt issued IDs

The TSA requires one form of government issued photo ID OR two forms of non photo ID, one of which must have been issued by a state or federal agency (e.g.: U.S. social security card). Their rules and Web site are silent on whether a driver's license must be current to be accepted. If you have your paper license and a social security card, voter registration card or something like that, I read their requirements to say you should be OK.

You might want to poke around on their site or even submit a question to get a definitive answer.

Unfortunately, my DL is the only gov't issued photo ID I have. Our library cards don't have pictures, they have bar codes.

I'll go get it renewed tomorrow.

I just hope DH's and the boys DLs come back in time too!!

Hubby renewed his last week and has the paper.

#1 son lost his wallet a couple of weeks ago, so currently has a paper ID,

Since I had to take #1 son to get a new license, I went ahead to get #2 son converted from learner's permit to DL, so he has the paper ID too!!

It will really look strange to TSA if all four of us have paper IDs!!!

If you really have nothing else, US passports can be issued in 48 hrs. if you pay the expedite fee.
