I arrived at work today to find a co-worker was so hoarse he could hardly speak. I told him I was sorry he didn't feel well and asked what he thought the problem was. He said it was a side effect of a flu shot, and that he felt fine, but sounded terrible. I asked if he had this issue before and he said (hoarsely) "every time". His shot was the seasonal flu shot, not swine flu.
Anybody else had this result?:confused3

Wow never here I have been getting the seasonal flu shot for the last 4 years and never had a side effect yet.

Hope he gets better soon.

Ron.

I wonder if he has an allergy to some ingredient in the flu shot? Perhaps that makes his throat close up a little and makes him sound hoarse?

Did he get the mist instead with the lovely live virus?

In adults, side effects from LAIV (FluMist®) can include

* runny nose
* headache
* sore throat
* cough

Otherwise, there's been one of those "something going around" things that causes a really hoarse, weird, voice... I had it, DS has had it...it's a weird one that might not be related at all.

Oh wait, backin' it up. Just went here: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/default.htm#flu

In the PDF for the seasonal needle one...hoarseness is considered BOTH a "mild problem" (section #6) and a *severe* side effect (section #7). Page 2 of that PDF. The severe side effect would go along with other signs of a big allergic reaction...
