Strange day at MK - 08/16

The computer system was down, but not the electric. Cash drawers wouldn't work, but people using cash or regular credit cards were probably still able to make purchases. The DDP is on the Disney Computers, so they couldn't access the info to do the transaction. Any cash registers attached to Disney Computers would have been down as far as accessing pricing & DDP info, so those transactions couldn't have been made.

The electric was still on or more rides would have been shut down. Some of the rides rely on the computers to run, so those would have experienced problems.

The rides are on a different computer system than reservations, turnstiles, and tickets.

We are at BWV this week and were in Epcot when the computer glitch happened at about 1:40 pm yesterday. It allowed for cash purchases, but for the first part of the outage you could not use DisneyDining or charge to your room. Later on, it allowed the system to store Dining meals for later update and all was fixed by about 4:30 pm. The service techs from SmartCity were all over the place looking for which node went bad that was causing the problem and we were later told it was a router or hub in a node near Epcot that caused the problem. I'm not sure how accurate the info is, but that was what we heard yesterday. it does seem like we got two free quick service meals out of it all as they still haven't posted today.

Different systems but, I think, same network infrastructure.

If something caused a switch or a main router or some other part of their network backbone to fail at Central Server (wherever that is for them), it would explain a lot of the issues being described.

Edit: And now, having read BigTigger's response, that sounds like exactly what happened.

At TDS yesterday we were unable to sell any tickets. Everything else worked fine.

I can't reach the Disney Travel Company this morning. Do you think it has something to do with the outage yesterday?

They sent me duplicate tickets (MYW package with vouchers) and I'm trying to find out what to do.

Wow - that's pretty interesting. I can't imagine the chaos in IT with people scrambling to find out the source of the problem. I wonder how much money they lost in those hours with lost transactions and lost income streams? I used to work in IT at Ford, and there were certain systems that if they went down it would stop production. They had some sort of general formula for how much money they would be losing for every minute it was down. It wouldn't take long at all to get into the millions. Pretty nerve-wracking for the people responsible for those systems.

Credit cards/cash were no problem Tuesday - it was only the DPP. Rides breaking are just the "luck" of the draw - we just happened to hit them all that day (I'm sure that was not related to the DPP computers going down). :)

They may have been letting people in with the computers down at some point, but they definitely stopped that when we wanted back in. Just not our lucky day - but we still had a great time!

We were at MGM today and had no problems with computers, etc...
