Strange Children's names...

Dh's grandfather had a pair of older twin siblings named Donald and Donalda (boy/girl).
DH's grandfather also had a twin sister. Their names are Gerald and Geraldine. :-P

Everybody thinks DS's name is a little unusual (James) but not terribly so. It's not a super popular name,I think.

I hate it when someone that I think is a neat, cool person names a baby a "bad" name. One girl I know named her baby Katherine (ugh) another named her little boy Johnathon. No offense to those names, but they are SO square. There are too many neat names out there to use a name like Katherine. YUCK!

I happen to think that Katherine is a beautiful, classic name, and not at all "yuck", "bad" or "ugh".

A lot of the names mentioned in this thread are just ridiculous and I feel sorry for the children who are burdened with them. Someday, they are going to be adults trying to get jobs, and who is going to take them seriously with a name like "Chase Me Ricky" or "Nakota".

Harvard University did a study a few years ago, in fact, submitting identical resumes to various companies; one with a "traditional" name and one with a "unique" name. The traditionally named applicants received far more callbacks.

If I want an outlet to express my creativity or "cool"ness, I'll paint a picture, thanks.

MTE!

DSIL's DH wanted to name DNephew IttyBitty 'Sawyer" which makes me t hink of Tom Sawyer. And he was going to pronounce it 'Soy-er" which sounds silly to me.

Thank god they changed their mind and went with a good, solid CLASSIC name: Elijah :)

Much better than Soy-er. :rotfl2:

I don't understand this. You think someone is "neat" and "cool", but because they name their child a classic name, they are now square? How old are you?

Well said. It appears that if this person who thinks Katherine and Jonathon are 'ugh' ever has kids, we will have another Synsyre or Brookelynne on our hands. No doubt the name will be full of unnecessary y's . I think it is very sad what people name their children lately.

James is unusual? It is one of the most common names ever. :confused3

Well, my name is Reynic. Actually, Alice Kelly Reynic. My sister has 3 names and my youngest does as well. My sister is Whitney too, it was different when she was named 27 years ago.

Have aunts named Omalee and Arden and a great aunt named Ora Mae (pronounced Orie Mae, we Appalachians tend to put -ie at the end of -a names like Loretty-Loretta, Sury-Sara, Cory-Cora (my greatgrandmother).

My other Great grandmother was Ollie Cleo.

I work in public schools so we see a lot of different names:
Chandelier Miracle
Heaven Leigh Angel
Junior Burnette, Jr. (yes he was Jr. Jr., but dad must be Jr. Sr.!)
Cinderella
Maverick
Pebbles
Tiny Beth
Shaisu (not an Asian child)

***I grew up near a family whose kids all were called nicknames, not their given names. They were Tyke, Dank, and Pago.

I fogot to mention earlier that my DH has brothers named Jerry and Gary (twins) and another brother Terry. They are all about 18 months apart. DH is Mike. Not sure what they were thinking with the three oldest.

My DS's name is Jackson Adam

I wanted something not too common but not too 'out there' either.
I prefer Jackson over Jack (although I like the name Jack, it's just too common for me) As DS gets older he may prefer to be called Jack, who knows.

I get told Jackson is pretty uncommon, but I have been hearing it more and more though.

I like unique names but not so unique that you think "what were they thinking?"

Everybody we meet is like "Oh..what an unusual name. Is he named after St.James?". NO he is not. :rotfl:

We like it because it's something you don't hear every day. And NO we do not call him Jim or Jimmy or Jimbo. I hate those nicknames. We call him by his name or Bugs or Bugsy (long story).

:rotfl: I would never think anyone named James is named for St. James.

It's kind of sad that people are so used to 'strange' names, that they think James is unusual. It's a classic name. Very nice.

My three closest friends are named Aprile (with the "e" so that people wouldn't think she was necessarily named after the month, even though she WAS born in April), April (born in July), and Summer (born on the first day of) not that they are strange names in and of themselves, but I think it is interesting that all of my closest friends have this type of name (we are all in our mid-20s now).

My SO's oldest brother (who's actual name is Robert Christopher III) goes by Chris, he married a Christa, and they had Robert Christopher the IV who goes by Christopher. That is a lot of "Chris" names.

SO has this brilliant idea that he wants to name our son Edwin James (that is first and middle). He thinks it sounds intelligent (like attorney/stockbroker)....ummm I don't think I want an Edwin.

I work with a Nemo (as in Finding :fish: )

My Dad and Brother are both James although my Dad goes by Jim. My Grandma (Dad's Mom) tried to call my Brother Jimmy. My Mom said NO WAY! LOL!

My name isn't strange, but I am named after characters in a book. My name is Amy Beth. My mom's favorite book is Little Women.

LOL! My mom's favorite book too!!!! :goodvibes

That is funny; my family is like that and I am so used to it, I forget that it rhymes!!! (ha ha)

my mother's siblings:
Jerry & Terry-twins
Larry
Gary (who married Terri, who shares the exact name as brother Terry...first, middle and last)
Sheila
Shirley

My grandmother would always go though everyone until she got to the one she wanted ("Jerry..no, Terry...no, Larry...no, Gary, yeah that's it")

DD's name was not popular when I named her. It is growing in popularity though. I know a few of our relatives didn't like it. Which is why I did not tell them DS's name. They knew about Eli, but not his full name, Elias Jacob. Last week I asked MIL what the relatives thought about it and she said, with hesitation, "It's different." LOL! FIL can't get it right (calls him Elijah) and DH's Grandma says she is going to call him EJ because she can't remember Elias. We let that one go because she is 80. No one else better try it! ;) :)

In Jewish circles that would not be an uncommon name at all. I know my DH cousin's son is Elias--not sure what the middle name is. I like it a lot!

My kids names are not unusual but we get a tremendous amount of compliments on how beautiful they are--and when at WDW the girl embroidering the Mickey Mouse ears said that she has seen thousands of names but never one like my daughters! The three boys are : Tristan, Brennan, Kaeden and our little girl MacAylee

Someone came in once and got a library card for her daughter Enola Gay (name of airplane that dropped the atomic bomb, I think.) Wonder if she grew up to get bombed on Friday nights?

That is the worst name I've ever heard of. Who would want a name that makes people think of such a God-awful event? I can usually laugh at these crazy names people give their children, but whoever named their daughter Enola Gay needs a good smack. :sad2:

I have four littles ones there names are not different ( I dont think they are )

Hayleigh Laura Anne
Morgan Eloise
Ethan Clint
Kai Orrin Spencer

My cousins name is Jefferson Craig (we call him Jeff). He named his son Jefferson Clifton (we call him jefferson) and his other son Jackson Carlton. they all have the same initials. :)
