Strange call about Disney Timeshares

We had a phone call tonight wanting to know information about our Disney Timeshare. (their words)
They said that their records show that we purchased a Disney Timeshare a couple of years ago and wanted to know why we have never used it. I said "What are you talking about, they answered that they wanted to know why we would purchase a Disney Timeshare and not use it". I hung up the phone on him. He talked with broken english and had a very bad accent. Was I terrible for hanging the phone up on him???
Has anyone else got these weird phone calls???

Thanks,
Debbie

p.s. We use out DVC about three to four times a year.......

I don't think it's terrible at all that you hung up on him. Do you have caller ID? Did it look legit?

I think you did great hanging up on him. You didn't ask him to call, right? If not, who does he think he is to bother you.

If he calls back, blow an airhorn in his ear and then hang up!

Did this person identify himself in any way (his name, what company he might have been calling from)?? Could he have been some type of telemarketer? Even so, I would not feel bad about ending the call by hanging up on him. Better safe than sorry.....why give him any more information. You did the right thing.

Your purchase of DVC is public record.

It is not uncommon for mortgage companies to get mortgage records from County Courthouses and then call to ask about refinancing for a lower interest rate.

This is the same type call. The caller has no idea if you use your timeshare or not. His script said to say...since you don't use your timeshare. IF you had said, well...we really don't use it, then the TELEMARKETER would have been nice enough to take it off your hands (at below the market price, of course.)

You did the right thing.

I get stuff in the mail all the time asking me to sell my timeshare, so it's a short jump to finding my phone number.

Still way creepy, though. Good job hanging up on him...

I probably would have gotten as much info from the caller....before I hung up on him! I would have then tried to find out who called and why.....but then I am into conspiracy theories and probably don't have enough to do..;) :lmao:

Our numbers are on the "do not call list". I love to string folks like that along. I ask all kinds of questions about the business, where it's located etc, etc. Then I ask if they have ever heard of the national "do not call list". They always say they have, and then I inform them that it is not legal to call someone on that list unless they have done business with them before, or they are a charitable organization or a political campaign. Since they are none of those, I thank them for the information about their business and then inform them that I will be calling the attorney general's office to report a violation of the do not call list. THEN...I follow through and do just that. Usually the office thanks me, and I'm sure nothing more comes of it, but it only takes one or two of those, and I NEVER get calls anymore!:rotfl:

We have never received a call. We are on the do not call list.

BUT, I receive e-mails !
Subject always about selling our Timeshares. I delete them.
How do they get out e-mail address ?

:cool1:

I've gotten pretty nasty with telemarketers anymore. Your call is too strange, however, and getting off the line without providing them any info sounds like the wise thing to do.

Have you ever visited a website about timeshares? They may have gotten the email address directly from your computer.

You, or someone in your family, could also have innocently entered one of those "free vacation" drawing you sometimes see in stores. Those are usually promoted by a timeshare company, and the form has a place to enter your email. Any contest not run directly by the store is usually a data gathering tool in disguise.

There were also phone directory type websites (don't know if they still exist) that collected email address as part of their listings.

we get a heck of a lot of 1-800 numbers calling. i don't even answer just answer (to stop it from ringing and/or going to the a/m) and hang up.

if anyone that should be calling is on the other end - they'll call back maybe when i'm not home and leave a message.

otherwise i couldn't care a less if i heart their feelings -

maybe next time i'll ask them for their home numbers and call them when they are having dinner, or trying to put their 2 year old to bed see how they like it.

Even will on the DNC list we get strange calls asking about our timeshare. My dh filled out some type of survey on golf course timeshares and then they really flooded in, I could have killed him. don't feel bad about hanging up, I do it all the time

just tell him to leave his home phone number and when it is convenient for you, you will call him. ;)

Be Carefull filling out the sweepstakes in the malls saying win this car, here in the Houston area it is the local timeshares gathering data. I am sure someone wins but it is somebody whospent a lot buying into their timeshare

I've not had calls at home, but once I got a text message on my cell phone asking me to contact them to sell my timeshare. I was ticked off about that one!!!!!!!

I always ask unsolicitated callers if they can PLEASE HOLD :thumbsup2 for a minute....I then set down the phone and walk away. I usually come back in about 30 minutes or so and to my amazement....the line is dead! Go Figure!!!! I see it this way...if they think it's OK to waste my time, then it's OK for me to waste theirs! :lmao:

:lmao: That's hilarious! What a great idea! I will definitely have to try that. The only timeshare phone call I received since purchasing DVC was from Hilton Timeshare. They asked if we were taking a vacation this year and according to their records, we are timeshare owners. Then they asked if we would like to take a vacation with them. I just told them no thank you and to please remove us from their call list. But the woman continued talking and said, "but wouldn't you just love to take a vacation to an exciting place with us?" And then I hung up on her. :)
