Anyone try to use the pool at Stormalong Bay this past Sunday? Closed all day! And it was the best day of the Labor Day weekend - no rain, no thunder, no lightning.

We went down to use the pool early afternoon. Was told that the pool was closed as they had to "shock" it and would not re-open until 7:00 PM. The pool never re-opened until the next day. Was sorely disappointed. Called down to the front desk and was told to use the quiet pools. Went there and they were PACKED! No room in the pools or around them - beside that, I have a 4 year old who doesn't yet know how to swim and the quiet pools have no kiddie pool. Called the front desk and they said sorry and I could go to the Boardwalk resort to use their pool.

Now I could be mistaken but we used to have a pool and the only time it ever needed a shock was when there was a high algae count usually brought on by prolonged days of rain or a delay in maintenance (if we went away and had no one to add the chemicals). Well, it didn't rain that day and had only a couple quick showers the day before. So if shocking was really what the SAB pool needed, then it sounds like a lack of maintenance. Needless to say, we were sorely disappoitned as we had set aside that afternoon as an extended afternoon of pool use.

Also, they now close the pool bar at 6:00 PM (used to be open until 7:00 PM until after Labor Day). I spoke with the CM at the pool bar (got to know him by name as we have been at the YC/BC 3 times over the past year or so. I told him it seems like Disney has been doing alot of cutbacks of things over the past 2 years or so. He agreed and he added that "Disney thinks that people don't notice, but they do".

I read on another post somewhere that it was b/c of an accident in the pool water - if you know what I mean.

There are one or two other reasons to have to shock a pool. I used to have one and we had to shock it every time the kid next door (not potty trained) swam in it. Our new development has a pool as well and (there are alot of kids in our development) it has to be shocked at least 2-3 times a week for "unauthorized material in the water". Get the idea? I also heard the rumor that there was a 'spill' of some sort on that day. I think you might be glad you didnt get to swim in it at that time. (grin).
Sorry it happened tho- its always a huge bummer when it happens in my development pool. They do have to close it for the rest of the day.

PS- would you happen to know how late SAB is open in the month of Sept? It dosnt appear on park hours and I was kind of hoping for a late swim there.....

I see....it's all starting to come to me now....glad I wasn't swimming.

The pool was open until 10:00 PM as of yesterday. It was open until 11:00 PM last year but I guess they are closing it an hour earlier.

We have a pool and general pool maintenence calls for shocking it at least once a week--regardless of outside conditions--more if conditions warrant it.

Pool hours for SAB became 10:00am to 8:00pm begining the day after Labor Day.

Let me also say from a reliable source that you did not want to swim on Sunday.

We had planned a pool day also. We swam at BW. Must have been pretty bad to shut the pool down for a minimum of 6 hours. Monday was nice though and we spent all day at SAB!

Public pools have stricter laws than home pools would, I work at a Y and we have a pool, when someone has an accident we must close the pool immediately and then shock it and also we have to wait a certain period of time before reopening it.

Yes we wwere there!! AND it was our last day and planned on using the pool all day! I was told that if the accident was a "solid " accident they could of contained it and shut the pool down for 3 hours or so but it was not!! I wont get too graphic but I think you know what I mean! GROSS!! And for health reasons he had to shut it down fo r atleast 8 hours!!

GROSS!!!!!!!!! I hope nothing like that happens when I am there next week. Btw, I shock my pool every 2 - 3 days ;)

Wow. Not to get off the subject but I am surprised how often people shock their pools. It was a long time ago when we had a pool (I was a teenager) so I may have forgotten how often we shocked it. I do remember doing the test daily for algae and PH. If algae count was high, that's when we shocked it.

OHGosh!! I've never laughed so hard!!

Why, oh why, does this thead remind me of Caddyshack?!?! And I don't think ya'll are talking about a snickers bar!!!

The poor parents, they must have been sssoooooo embaressed!!! I think I'd have packed my bags & asked for a hotel switch.....

Not knowing much about general pool maintenance - could someone explain what 'shocking the pool' means??

Its a huge dose of I think chlorine- has the effect of shocking the germs out of the pool. You can buy "pool shock" in Walmart (or pool stores I imagine- grin) that you just mix w/a bit of water and throw in- for larger pools you add it to the....pump..skimmer..its been a while. lol
It kills all the germs and if you go in the water too soon after administration, it will burn your skin and bleach your clothes.

We were there too. It was our first day. We were told that the closure was due to "contamination". The pool had to be cleaned, shocked and re-circulated. That's a LOT of water!

I don't mind. I'd rather Disney take precautions than have my kids get sick from swimming in "dirty" water. We went to the quiet pool at the Disney Villas (where we were staying). It was busy, but not too bad.
