Storm worry

Hi

I know I will probably sound like a crazy worry wart but we are flying into Orlando next Wednesday and due to sail out of port canaveral on the 16th May.

I've seen in the news a tropical storm is brewing off the Bahamas coast and will he the first named one of the season.

Should I be worried, we've never sailed in bad weather so don't know how it will effect the ship or us. We've only cruised once and that was in the Mediterranean.

Do not worry if there is a storm they will change route to avoid it.

I have had two or three cruises were ports were altered or routes changed to avoid a storm, they will not put you in danger. We had Eastern Caribbean's become Westerns and even double dips at castaway cay. On a Panama crossing we missed two massive hurricanes and dropped one port and added another.

The current storm seems to be going off East so should not be near where you cruise anyway.

Relax you will have a fantastic cruise.

I am tracking the storm too since we fly out Saturday and sail on Sunday. I am more worried about the flight. We cruised through two hurricaines on our Canadian sailing (who would have thought hurricaines in Canada!). Overall it was very smooth and they went around them. There was only one night that I was a little queasy.

You will be fine, do not worry. Hurricanes follow me, this year is not predicted to be active, next year 2016 will be active.

I agree with DISNEY FANTASY, do not worry. On my family's last cruise there were two hurricanes that shown up close to our route, and they rerouted us. If the captain does not think it is safe, they will figure out what to do. The worse thing that is going to happen, is you may not go to a port. If the seas get rough they may temporarily close down the outside deck areas and pools to keep everyone safe. You will be fine. Just remember to have fun and relax.

I agree with DISNEY FANTASY, do not worry. On my family's last cruise there were two hurricanes that shown up close to our route, and they rerouted us. If the captain does not think it is safe, they will figure out what to do. The worse thing that is going to happen, is you may not go to a port. If the seas get rough they may temporarily close down the outside deck areas and pools to keep everyone safe. You will be fine. Just remember to have fun and relax.

Yes, the worst issues normally is Castaway cosy as they can't move it, if a storm directly hits it cruises may not call for a while. Whereas ships change direction they get out if the way. One ship did end up in Galveston a few years back when it was routed to port Canaveral , do have trip insurance to cover storms and re routing but you will be safe.

And as said sailed on cruises with storms, one went near two including Katrina, and another was swapped at port Canaveral to a western from a Eastern, fine weather on it.

I'm worried about the flight too. We are flying in from the UK next Wednesday. It's our first family long haul flight and I have a terrifying fear of flying so news of a storm isn't helping.

I'm just trying to suck it up and be brave in front of the kids

Again they are route, so I had one on Virgin change route to avoid a storm.

Normally Virgin from Gatwick goes up a bit in a circle and then down the East coast of the USA. On one flight we went down to Maderia and straight across the Atlantic only hitting the USA coast at Port Canaveral and in.

Well poop next year I will be the one worrying LOL as I have my first and 2nd cruises scheduled next year - One in Feb which I wont worry about except getting out of Colorado snow, but the one Sept 3rd has me worried.

Our first cruise back in 2005 was during Hurricane Wilma and we were very nervous. Turns out there was no need to be concerned. We were suppose to go to the Western Caribbean, but they rerouted us to go East instead. We had a little bit of choppy water, but nothing to be concerned with and had a wonderful cruise. Cruise #6 was Panama last October and there were 2 hurricanes to get around. We did have rough seas for a day or two and we missed two ports (which for us is no big deal since we don't get off the ship anyway). The captain kept us updated with current weather reports and even had a storm tracker at guest services if you wanted to look at it. He even came out before one of the shows to explain our route and how we would go around the storm. We felt very safe and the crew did everything in their power to make everyone comfortable. There was one day I know they had to close the pools, but nothing else major. Their first concern was to keep everyone and the ship safe, which is what they did. It a awesome cruise.

They are only saying at this point it is a area of disturbed weather and may develop tropical characteristics. No names ........it is very likely it will be far north of florida by next week.

Don't worry at all. It is early in the season of storms and more than likely it will dissolve off shore very quickly. Storm season started early this year, but I think that means lots of small stuff that fizzles out. I just came off a three day cruise, and we had perfect weather in the bahamas, we were very lucky. I wish we hadn't been so lucky, we all wished we would have had more bad weather so that we could spend more time on the ship. Seriously, hoping for bad weather next time. so we can chill.

El Nino suppresses hurricane activity in the atlantic. It brings more rain and activity to the pacific. We need rain so that's a good thing.

Disney doesn't go around all hurricanes, but it does miss almost all of them. Odds are excellent that if there is a hurricane or big storm in the path your ship will go elsewhere.
