Storm Watch: Hurricane Sandy

This was tweeted to a local news station. Manhattan is totally dark with the exception of 1 World Trade Center.

We are north of Philadelphia. Around 12 it was actually pretty quiet and the transformer across the street blew out and went on fire, of course we lost power. Called the fire department and no one ever showed. The pole eventually broke off and was leaning on the wire, not quite falling. It was on fire for at least 2 hours until it finally went out. At around 4pm the electrical company (PECO) came and fixed it, by about 7 we got out power back. I really applaud PECO and the way they are handling things.

Within the past few hours we have heard other transformers blow and heard the familiar sound of electricity surging. It's really scary, luckily it must be far away enough that we can't see it when we look outside. We haven't lost power either, which makes me think it must be far down the road. In some ways we are lucky that ours happened so early on because PECO was able to come and safely take care of it before the weather got really bad. Now the wind is just really horrible and pounding, I am hoping we don't lose any trees. I think I might sleep downstairs tonight...

Con Edison deliberately shut down the power in lower Manhattan this evening to hopefully save things later on. Not such a horrible idea if it works and people can wake up tomorrow morning with power.

Loudoun County (30 miles west of the white house) checking in. We're doing pretty well. Some heavy rain and wind but nothing too bad. My whimpy birch tree is still standing. Sent out the National Guard to get McDonalds..ok my son-in-law is the guardsman! but he didn't think it was so bad here. Sump pump keeps pumping and the back drain is staying clear. The occasional light flicker but nothing unusal. staying dry and warm...now that I closed the library window that I found cracked open 3 inches!:scared1:

Just to let everyone know, where I live..Toledo, Ohio...we are one of the last west cities to get this effect from Sandy. It's very windy and we're getting rain with snow mix with 50-60mph winds that won't die down until Wednesday or Thursday. I know I'm very fortunate compared to my other friends on here, but it just goes to show that weather doesn't care where you live....

How eerie!

We've got a lot of wind here (Central Ohio) and the gusts are up to 50mph. Some areas have lost power, but, thank goodness, we still have power. It's supposed to get worse tomorrow.

Stay Safe, everyone!

Sayhello

Glad to hear your all safe. We had it come though yesterday. We keep power all day which I'm thankful for. There are families in Norfolk Va that have no power. The kids have a two hr delay so hubby is taking them. Ds#1 usually drives them to school but I well fell better knowing hubby is driving them.

Not to sound dramatic, but NJ (and NYC) has experienced massive destruction. Flooding, fires, structural breaks, etc. There's also a nuclear plant on second alert due to water levels. Seaside Heights and Atlantic City boardwalks have been torn apart. I cant even begin to count how many towns are under water right now: AC, Seaside, Wildwood, Belmar, Union Beach, Keyport, Keangsburg, parts of Sayreville and Bound Brook, areas of Bergen County, and more. Latest report says over 2.2 million in NJ alone are without power (and consequently heat). I've never experienced anything like this.

Sitting over here in NZ and our tv stations have interrupted normal programs and we have had live coverage of the storm for the last 6 hours.

Just want to wish you all the best and please keep safe as it looks terrifying from over here.

That crane is really worrying. I was over in NY two years ago and travelled round from there and its so sad to see all these places I remember having this happen.

Take care and know that people from all over are thinking about you all and sending positive thoughts.

OMG!! they just showed the facade of a building in manhatten shearing straight off. That was awful - reminds me of the big earthquake we had over here last year.

OMG the devastation.....I just can't tear myself away.
Nik, do you have power yet? How are things right in your neighbourhood?

For the record, here in NS, we are on the right hand side of the storm so wind and rain for the rest of the week. Wind to 50 kms, so nothing compared to the south of us. Rainfall warning for NB, although again nothing like NY and NJ. It is quite warm here as well - 55F or so.

Gotta go to work although my thoughts are with everyone including the nurses, doc, police, firefighters, etc. God Bless

Checking in from here in Cincinnati, Ohio and just wanted to say that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you. We were experiencing some of the winds from the outer bands and my son woke up terrified, but I can't imagine just how terrible the sounds were for all of you. Stay safe and as warm as possible.

Check in when you can!

:grouphug:

We were apparently lucky here in Plymouth. No damage and never lost power.

Hope that those that were hit hard are helped quickly.

Wind and rain here, where we're on the edge of storm.

Looks like NJ and NYC got hit BAD. Prayers go out to all affected.

We lost power for about 8 hours yesterday. We were not expecting the crews to be out working overnight in the height of the storm but we got power back at midnight.

There are still 175,000 without power in NH so feeling very fortunate.

The rain is still coming down with a vengeance!

We are all OK here.

The real heroes of NYC last night have to be the staff at NYU, Bellevue and Palisades Hospitals that evacuated every patient in the dark, down the stairs and to other hospitals after all of their backup generators failed.

Also, Cory Booker in Newark who spent the entire night driving around Newark trying to convince people to move to safety.

Still no power. Going to set up the generator for the fridge and freezer.

Moonachie is a several towns away from us and they are underwater from a levee breach.
