Storage units?

What should I look for when I start checking into renting a storage unit?

I'm in the northeast, so I know I should look for one that is "climate controlled" - but what else?

Also, will my homewoner's insurance cover items in there while we still own the house - and our renter's insurance after we move out?

I've never done this before and any info would be greatly appreciated!

Gotta get back to packing things up soon and I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row here..

how big of one do you need? I say err on the side of bigger - trust me - DH and I FILLED one of those 'large' garage sized ones at Public Storage (common in northeast) when we moved out of our house.

make sure it's easy to get to - I once had to walk nearly a half mile just to get to my unit...THAT sucked!

find out when you are allowed to get in there - hours. And insure you have your own lock on there...fine if you have one of their locks as well - but make sure only YOU can get into the unit.

I 'believe' you pay an 'insurance' as part of the monthly rent - but you'd have to double check.

be aware that certain things can't be placed in there - unregistered cars, propane tanks from your grill, etc...

and shop around - some will give you a free first month or a free (or discounted) uhaul-type rental.

Thanks, stinkerbelle! That's a bunch of stuff right there that I wouldn't have thought of!

It's going to be hard to figure out what size I need because there will be things that we're keeping for our length of stay in the apartment, but then we'll be getting rid of them when we move on again..

This whole issue is beginning to feel like a huge jigsaw puzzle with pieces that just won't fit! Eeeeeek!

Our friends had their storage unit broken into and stuff stolen. Their renters insurance covered the stolen stuff.

they have 'guidlines' to follow...I was once shown a 'this will fit 2 rooms of furniture' storage space...um, my cube here at work is bigger.

we had to store a bunch of stuff for 6 months while our house was being built - we had ZERO room in the apartment we were renting. in the storage until we had

1 unregistered car - heheh - it's a 1973 barracuda DH is restoring - there's no engine in it (and it only had 3 wheels when we moved it in...at night)
all the parts to said car
2 sets of mattresses/set of bedroom furniture
couch, recliner, dining room set, chairs
all outdoor furniture
all of DH's tools (like half of sears)
boxes and boxes of kitchen stuff/glassware/books/photos/movies/etc...


i could go on and on...it's amazing what you accumulate! we tossed ALOT of crap in the moving process...but we still FILLED - up to the ceiling - that storage unit.

definetly start moving the big stuff in first and pile lighter stuff on top - best of luck to you.
