Stone Mountain Park in Atlanta & other attractions

I know this is an old thread but posting in hopes that someone who has visited this park already can help.

We are thinking about camping at this park this year & just wondered how the roads are getting to the park? We camp in TN occassionally & somewhat go past our destination and come in from the other side of town to stay on interstates and avoid curvy, mtn. roads. (It's faster & safer pulling our TT.) Although some of the campgrounds we have stayed at gave directions that, if you didn't know better, took you straight to those dangerous roads. :scared1:

Noticed you can take interstates almost all the way there - just wondering how the roads are just before getting there.

Haven't been to Stone Mtn Park in awhile but it is interstate all the way which branches off to the entrance. No curvy, mtn roads.

We were there just last week. It's all Interstate and then you exit off straight to the main entrance. Even if you go in the back entrance and go through the little town, it's still right off the interstate. Have fun!

Just want to make sure that you understand that St. Mountain isn't much of a mountain, and is a fairly developed destination in the metro Atlanta area. I like it there, but I live here.

Making sure that you don't think you are headed for some rural wilderness area.

LOL! I also live in GA and this made me smile. :rotfl2: Only in Georgia would Stone Mountain be called a mountain! It is a great place to visit...but not if you expect a mountain!

I didn't know what to expect really. Thanks for the info. :thumbsup2

My husband is from Snellville right there by Stone Mountain and when I first met him, he was stationed in IL where I lived. I went home with him one weekend to meet his parents and he kept hyping up this Stone Mountain place. So we were driving along 78 off of 285 and we rounded the one corner where the "mountain" suddenly comes into view and I almost laughed....I expected a real mountain! Not a giant slab of granite sticking up out of the ground or whatever it is :rotfl: Still, it's become one of my favorite places to go whenever we visit my ILs. I love to hike to the top, see the laser show and visit all of the little shops and stuff. It's a great place to visit - but definitely nowhere near a real mountain :)

So is it realistic to think we can do the Aquarium, Coke museum and the zoo in one day? We would not be able to start the day doing these things until around 12:30 due to some medical appointments in the morning.

As an out-of-towner....I am going to say no to going to the Aquarium, Coke and Zoo in one day! I used to live in Atlanta....and my mom and sister still do...so we visit each summer. My sister is a passholder at the zoo and aquarium...she told me it would only take about 2 hours at each place. Well, we spent about 4-5 hours at the aquarium and all day at the zoo! Most people who live in Atlanta go to these places multiple times a year....so they do not necessarily look in every nook and cranny and spend lots of time at each exhibit. My mom came with us to the aquarium and said we really look at the exhibits...where my mom and sister usually cruise on by..take a look..and keep going. My kids and I like to explore and take our time looking around....expecially if we know we will not be coming back for a year or more. The zoo is another story....they have a nice playground...kiddie rides....animals....my son and I took our time and really enjoyed our day.

Take your time and enjoy your stay! Have fun!
