Stoller/wheelchair or something in between?

My 8 yo ds had surgery to lengthen his heel cords in both legs in late May. We're going to WDW Aug. 16. He will be able to walk but I'm not sure how far or long.

I'm afraid he might be too big for a stroller (and I wouldn't want anyone upset by seeing a big child in a stroller, ugh) but I'm not sure he would want to be in a wheelchair either.

Are there any other options?

Rent a wheelchair from one of the outside providers. They can provide a child sized wheelchair. Check over on the DISabilities board for contact information for the various providers.

My DS developed a knee infection during one of our vacations to WDW. The Poly gave him a wheelchair for his use while we were there.

If someone is upset abut seeing a big kid in a stroller - it's THEIR problem- not yours :). We just got back 2 days ago from WDW and US and saw MANY "big" kids in strollers. We even saw a few grown-ups sitting on the foot area resting while waiting for the parade to start. My boys went for 5 solid days from 7 AM till 12 AM and did ok but on the 6th day they were too tired and had started blisters. I wanted to go to the parks for our last day.

The oldest (10 years old ) is supposed to be in a wheelechair anyway because of health issues. The wheelechairs at the parks are made for adults ( we haven't found any child's size ones at the parks for rent ). They make the kid's legs hang over the edge and not touch the foot rests- it hurts the back of his knee area :(. Also they don't have the nice head /sun block umbrella on them as the strollers do so the seat makes him sweat lots on his back and his legs.

If he's comfortable with the idea of a stroller then go for it. The strollers at the parks have big soft wheels on them and are a breeze to push- even with a "big" kid in them. Make sure to take a soft cotton towel for his bum as the seats get very hot in the sun. A double may be more comfortable for him - the singles are a bit cramped.

Hope your trip goes well. Remember - you have to make sure that your son is safe and comfortable- do what you need to do - don't worry about how it looks to other people  - you won't ever see any of these people again anyway. We never saw any people staring or heard any remarks- so don't worry. Everyone was too busy trying to get to their next ride and trying to stay cool to spend any time about weither my boys were too big for a stroller or not.

We even took a picture of how silly/big they were in the strollers - all legs and such and they didn't care - all they said was "thank you Mom"- made for a much more relaxed trip for us that last day.

My DS, good sized 8yo, fits well in a double stroller and it gives
us space for storage of sweatshirts, bathing suits, water bottles.
Last year, DS had gotten that really serious influenza the week
before we went and we rented a double a few times when he
said he was tired. Opnions of others on this issue amount to
nothing important.

Thanks for all the good advice. I will look into the double stroller. :)

And I really don't care who doesn't likes my "big" boy in the stroller, I was just being a little sarcastic  ;)
