does anyone know on any items evere being stolen out of a room. i plan on
having a couple of cameras and a laptop with me.
if not safe - do they have a place you can check in valuables

Bailey:

I will let you know this about our recent trip. I had three cameras with me. They will not fit in the safe in the room. At any given time, I had my camera bag (with extra lenses) and at least one camera in the room. At other times, I had all three cameras in the room. Your room stewards will know who belongs in your room, and they don't prop the door open unless they are near by. Does this guarantee that someone couldn't slip in? No. But, I didn't lose so much as a roll of film on our 4 day. We kept the camera bag in the closet, not out in the open. Hope this helps!

We have been on several Disney cruises with digital cameras, digital camcorders, laptops, mpg players, cell phones, radios, and so on. We have never had a loss from our stateroom. In fact, when I left a camera in one of the dining rooms, our server recovered it and had a VMS waiting for us in our stateroom.
All of the cruise lines want repeat cruiserers so they will do what they can to prevent personal property losses.

Honestly, in all the time I've spent reading DIS boards or talking to people about going to Disney I've never heard of anyone having anything stolen from their stateroom or a Disney hotel room. I DID read of an incident once where someone had narcotics stolen from their value resort room (they were on pain meds). I felt very safe w/ my belongings while on the Disney Magic. I never put anything of value on the safe (too small) and didn't feel unsafe about having it in my suitcase or something. I think you'll be fine. :wizard:

Your stateroom should be relatively safe, although you may want to tuck your expensive items a little out of the way - i.e. I don't know I'd leave an expensive video camera sitting on the bed - but tucked under the bed (lots of room there) or tucked under the desk would be a better idea.

Also, watch your expensive stuff on CC. There have been reports of cameras, etc, being stolen there. I'd recommend either a cheap disposible for CC day (maybe even a waterproof one) - or getting your video and digital pictures in a half hour or an hour and bringing your expensive equipment back to your stateroom. We always had one of us out of the water with our digital camera, but that does make it difficult for the whole family to snorkle.

Disney recommends you don't check your valuables, including electronics, and instead bring them in your carryon.

Most theft is going to be opportunity theft....someone might be tempted by a camera on a bed with the door proped open or laying unattended on a beach chair. Its more rare for someone to make an effort to steal something - particularly with as much stuff that is left lying around for opportunity theft.

We have sailed DCL 12 times with #13 next month....not once have we had anything stolen from our cabin or anywhere else onboard...in fact on two different occassions we had lost valuables and there were returned to us (after we thought we would never see them again).

Our DD had brought along a valuable necklace to wear on formal night and she lost it. We notified guest service immediately but had little hope of ever seeing it again. Our DD felt horrible because she had just received it as a gift before we left. Low and behold guest services called us within an hour and let us know that it had been found and turned in!!! It was found in the hallway outside our cabin.

Another time I left my new 35MM camera by the Mickey pool and someone had moved our stuff off the chair to use it and placed the items under the chair. When I went to retrieve our stuff I did not notice the camera was not with the rest of our stuff (it was tucked behind another chair). I finally noticed we did not have our camera when we went to take pics that night. Went to guest service and again, a CM found the camera while straightening the pool area and turned it in!!!

We also leave several $1.00 bills in the night table drawer to use as room service tip money and never had it touched. I do lock up my other cash and passport/plane tickets in the safe though.

We leave our digital camera and laptop out all the time and have never had a problem.

Just remember to lock your veranda door too, Remeber the thread about the kid sliding down the side of the wonder!

In 2002, my sunglasses (Mickey glasses with Mickey cord) left sitting on my chair by the Mickey pool, "came up missing". My guess is a tot nearby picked them up thinking they were her mommy's or just plain cute. They were turned into guest services.

In September 2004, I left my camera bag sitting on a table in the atrium while taking a picture of my daughter on the stairs. Came back 4 hours later...still sitting where I left it.

I need to take a class on keep track of my stuff!

In 6 DCL cruises we never had anything stolen. I even have walked away and left my purse and had to go back to get it and everything was fine. We leave our camera out and my husband leaves his laptop out. I do use the safe for my jewelry but it is out of habit. We even have left cash (one dollar bills and coins) on a vanity and it has never been touched. I also have never experienced any problems at Castaway Cay. I worry more about my luggage being broke into in transit after the cruise. Kathy

Mom had a small paring knife to cut her fruit and that was taken by the host/hostess with a note that it would be returned after the cruise. I guess a 75 year old woman with dentures and a small paring knife is a pretty serious security threat!

It was left in the bathroom. Next time we will lock it up in the safe with all the other "valuables"!!!

Well you will think I am a knucklehead but last week on the Magic while getting off in St. Marteen my green card was inside my Canadian Passport - it must have slipped out when I was putting it in my small purse that I was using. I had a message waiting for me saying that it was at the service desk. I also lost my car keys (I think getting on the ship was just way too much excitement for me) I did not realize they were missing until Friday when I thought to myself what did I do with those keys? I called Guest Services and they were turned in at the Port before we even left Port Canaveral. So I think you articles are safe. We had cameras left out and the kids would leave out money for the room service tip - never did I think our Room Host would take anything.

You people have better luck than I did - I left a travel alarm clock behind in our cabin, and a gameboy video game was left behind in my mom's cabin. I missed these things when I unpacked the day after our cruise, and called & reported them the next day. Gave exact descriptions and cabin numbers, and never heard anything after that.

We have always felt safe in leaving items out in our cabin as I suspect it would be a lot harder for a cast member if items went missing more than once. I usually leave my laptop setup on the desk for transferring the 5 million photos we seem to take.

I would be more concerned about leaving items on a chair at CC than leaving stuff in my room. You would hope that everyone is there to have fun and not to profit due to your trying to relax and not worry about everyday issues of society.

I had both my Leatherman Tools taken from my checked luggage. We found a receipt later in our stateroom and could pick them up after disembarkation in the terminal. They were obviously afraid that I would take the ship apart with them pirate: It's ridiculous considering all the knives one could steal in the restaurants

We had one of our bags accidentlly taken (I'm assuming it was an accident) by another guest. Most of our bags and us went to Minneapolis. We had filed a lost bag report with DCL.

The missing bag ended up with someone elses name on the airline (and our "Chip and Dale DCL tags) in Terre Haute. Delta Airlines called us and shipped us our bag (actually delivered it to the door, I was impressed).

Based on this, I don't think it would be dificult to take things (from bag claim, off chairs at CC, from deck chairs by the pool). Most people sailing are honest and there for a good vacation. And I think the majority of cast members can be trusted - I'm sure DCL comes down hard if a pattern of theft emerges. However, people also usually don't climb down the side of the ship.

To tell you how easy it is to stroll into someone else's room - our room steward had several doors propped open for cleaning. I strolled into one, started to look for whatever I wanted to grab, then realized I'd walked into the next door neighbors room. I sheepishly switched rooms.

We always travel with a laptop and cameras, we have never had anything taken out the room, we also always leave $ bill in one of the drawers, and nothing was touched, I felt very safe leaving things in the cabin.

I think your chances of having items returned drop dramatically when you check out of your cabin.....I left my make-up case behind in the cabin after we left it the last day and actually remembered before we left the ship...by the time I had gotten back to the cabin the room steward had cleaned it out....I think they just take most things left behind and through them out....or they send it down to the terminal to the lost and found box....we found our sons slippers in that box....I guess like anything...a lot of it is luck.

Jlima, I am surprised you did not get a call back. We have lost a few things over the years, both at the resorts and on the Magic and always got a call back if they could not find the item. If your loss was recent I would call again.

On our last DCL cruise, I discovered a few items (clothing) missing when I got home. Of course I had no proof of who might have taken them, but I think all should be careful about leaving anything of value out in the open.
