Do you think it would be a good idea to stock up on some bacon, sausage, ect? With the reports of the pork plants shutting down I was wondering.

Pork is actually one of the few meats you can actually get here in Georgia. You would think with all the chicken plants we have you could get chicken but nope, pork is just all there is.

There will be plenty of pork...on that, I wouldn't worry...

It's why it's always the cheapest and most available meat (and has been since this whole thing started)...

I do think Pork is going to become a bit of an issue where I live, as I am right in the heart of where these plants are. However, I don't think stocking up is a good idea at all, as it will take away from everyone elses ability to buy some as well.

Well not hording, but getting a few packs of bacon, sausage and hot dogs. There is a difference.

I have found plenty of chicken. Now Walmart is not the place to go for a lot of meat. But Food City and some other local grocery stores have had plenty.

If you eat pork regularly and have a place to store it, there is no harm in getting a little extra. I agree with PP that hoarding has caused a lot of the shortages for certain products rather than actual shortages. We might not always have our first choice of things in the market, but we're not going to starve here.

Well, I eat cured ham and bacon, but that’s all I really have to worry about. I always buy beef hot dogs and beef lil smokies.

I don’t eat pork chops or tenderloin, no matter how you cook it. Same with lamb. I spent so much time on the livestock show circuit helping people wash, shear and clip and that’s what I smell/taste when I eat it. Dad and I tried lamb for the very first time at Texas de Brazil and said the exact same thing. I’m now so glad I was scared to help wash the cattle!

My only concern with any type of seriously stocking up on meats is whether or not you have have a back-up power source for your fridge or freezer if you lose power. A chest style freezer will keep things frozen for a decent amount of time without power, but I've heard sad stories about people losing hundreds of dollars worth of meat because the power was out too long for their freezer to stay frozen.

Now if you're only talking about 20 bucks worth of hot dogs and bacon then go for it, but if you're considering really putting down some money on it, I'd just give your power situation a moment's thought first. We live in an area that often loses power during storms, so it's always one of the first things I think about.

Wait- you didn’t already buy a couple weeks worth of bacon???! I was on that one and stay stocked. I might have missed the Lysol wipes craze but when the government said have 2 weeks of food on hand darn straight that bacon was on my list! 😂

We kill a pack of bacon here every 2-3 days with a family of four. We keep 5-6 in the freezer on a normal week. Our 3 year old will eat 5-6 slices in a sitting if we let him.

I have generally found pork & seafood to be readily available. It's chicken or beef that usually ends up being one or the other.

I think what we have now isn't so much a hoarding issue. I usually went to the grocery store every 3-4 days. I'm trying to go every 7-9 days. I wouldn't normally buy a 10lbs pack of chicken but if you want people to go between visits longer then they are naturally going to buy more. My average grocery store bill was probably $50-100. I've spent $300+ on some recent visits because I'm combing trips.

On a related note, I told my wife to buy more olive oil last week because we are down to one bottle. There wasn't any which I thought might have something to do with Italy's situation. She read today that apparently olive trees in Italy have had their own disease going on this year and the only solution is to remove the infected tree and healthy trees surrounding it to avoid further spread. I will be buying a larger can of olive oil on my next trip should I be able to find one.

Pork belly prices are going through the roof.

You might find yourself paying more for it in the future, so stocking up on it might not be a bad idea. Eventually, you're going to pay more.

Did a freezer inventory today while straightening. We have 12 steaks,75 lbs ground beef, 4 briskets, 8 lbs cubed minute steak, 6 lbs short ribs, 5 whole chickens ,100 lbs misc. chick3n, 4 lbs sausage, 8 packs of pork chops (3 per pack) 5 lbs bacon and misc venison. I hope I don’t have to buy meat for many moons.

I have no bacon right now.

I would if I had the room for it but my freezer is full. Just go to restaurant supply stores, where they only sell big packs if you want to buy a lot. Somebody has to buy those, especially since restaurants aren't purchasing as much as they used to.

I can totally understand that. 4H and FFA have made us completely aware of animal smells and sometimes I get that pork taste and I feel the same way.
