Just got back yesterday from the World and had a great time. It is my third trip since 1996. I love Disney, but the cutbacks in staffing are starting to show in my opinion - especially in the maintenance department. The bathrooms in Magic Kingdom were not as clean as I remember in the past - the whole park wasn't. It seems to me that the Kingdom is showing its age. The worst thing was the smell on Splash Mountain. Now I know it is summer and things don't always smell great, but this was disgusting. The area at the top had such a strong bad odor (like rotting fruit or garbage)that it made the ride difficult to enjoy. The water also smelt very bad. But the worst was, the smell stayed with you all day because your clothes had gotten wet! Yuck!

Yuck!

I thought maybe you were talking about the handrails. When we rode in 2000, the cushion part of the handrails smelled so gross and it stayed on our hands. I could not wait to wash my hands.

Ohhh--you are right!! When we went 2 summers ago. that was a major comment in our family--yucko!!! Smelled like musty, old, rotten something! We rode it during e-night and felt like we smelled like that for the entire evening.

I also noticed the bathrooms in Disney were not as clean as trips in the past. The place you hold onto in the ride does stink and it has for years. I have to wash my hands after that ride. YUCK.....

Okay, I guess I'm not too weird now.
:o

I've been considering taking disposable rubber gloves for the next trip's rides on Splash Mtn!!!

I went on Splash Mountains several times this month, and didn't think the smell was any worse than the water usually smells on that type of ride. The water usually smells a bit funky.

As for the garbage smell, the trash for the Magic Kingdom winds up behind Splash Mountain to be processed. We went backstage near there on the Keys to the Kingdom tour, and the smell was pretty overpowering. If the wind is blowing in a certain direction, you can get a whiff of the garbage, and it's pretty strong.

Oh youck! Do you get totally soaked on Splash Mountain? Are the seats wet when you sit down on them? I've ridden before, but I was a lot younger then so I can't remember :p

Splash Mountain smells more like a wet Poodle to me....

Always wet seats when you get on...
And that grosses me out, but it doesn't stop me, lol!

Noticed nasty bathrooms all around on our recent trip, also.

EEEEWWW! I will never forget that smell. On our last trip I at first thought the guys in front of me had really bad B.O., but then I remembered reading about the smell on the internet. It was definetely coming from the padded areas.

I was just on Splash Mountain this past Monday and I definately noticed the bad smell. Earlier in the trip we went to IOA and those rides did not even have an odor to them.

Regardless of smell, it is one one my favorite attractions.

I am just sort of thinking out loud here.. How about sending your thoughts on Splash Mountain to WDW.. there must be something they can do about that... absolutely gross and if you thought the park was not clean and bathrooms dirty, I would write that as well..

Someone is not doing their job.. better that they should know it and especially if you remember which bathrooms were dirty.. Just a thought here.

I thought that's what ttbells meant, too. Last Sept my mom, sis, and I could NOT wash the smell off of our hands for the rest of the day. Quite irritating. I promised myself the next time I rode SM that I would never touch the handrails again.

We are arriving next Saturday and i do not think we will be riding Splash mountain,I cannot stand that smell and you cannot wash it off of your hands.:o Definetly stays on your clothes too.

Lately I have been carrying around in my purse (and at Disney World this past summer) a small bottle of Hand Sanitizer. We use it all the time, especially in restrooms in lieu of turning on water faucets, even after opening restroom doors. It's just something my family automatically does-waits for the Hand Sanitizer to be passed around. This way you don't have to wait to find a bathroom and wash your hands! I'm not obsessive compulsive, BUT-have you ever thought how many different hands are on shopping carts, etc? My hand sanitizer goes where I go, and it is especially handy on trips. Sounds like I'll definitely need it in October after Splash Mountain!!

I'm just wondering if you've sent a notice to WDW either via email, phone, or snail mail stating what you told here. Especially about the restrooms. Disney can't and won't do anything about it most likely *unless* people complain. So if you were there and noticed the bathrooms in bad shape or problems with a ride (if it's something that can be fixed), please contact Disney.
