Stinky Hair

I would have her shower and wash her hair daily, and really scrub her scalp. Rather than shower and wash hair every other day.

I would try a different shampoo, also double check that it is not an ear infection. My daughter has suffered horrible ear infections her whole life(she is almost 22) her ear would sometimes drain onto her hair while sleeping.

Thank you for all the idea's. Yes we are going wash it everyday from now on. I used a small amount of apple cider vinegar with a cup of warm water and rinsed her hair with it. I did email my ped today and she also suggest dandruff shampoo once a week.

Why does everyone jump to "go see a doctor" for such minor issues? It's smelly hair. It's dirty...wash it!

I did mis-read the original post and thought she was already washing it daily, but in general I jumped there because at that age, a hormonal imbalance is a possible option and I'd want to have any medical concerns eliminated sooner rather than later. I wouldn't rush her to the emergency room, but it's something I'd bring up with our doctor because if it were an early sign of a larger issue, I'd want to catch it early. I had a good friend growing up who had a fairly serious hormonal issue with sweating and it caused her a lot of embarrassment, and her parents were slow to take it seriously, so I think it's just a place I tend to go quickly.

In addition to what some have said about daily washing and giving the scalp a good scrub each time, also change her pillow case daily. Or if you can keep track, flip it over, and change every other day.

My hair tends to get that way because it is very thick and curly. I started using cowash (cleansing conditioner) in mint/rosemary daily and that helped tremendously.

My cousins children are half Korean and they all have very very thick hair. Even though your daughter is washing maybe she isn't getting down to her scalp if her hair is very thick, I would try supervising her hair washing to ensure she is in fact doing it properly and have her wash daily and try a different shampoo. You could be smelling a buildup of product. If you don't see any improvement after a week or so of this then maybe seek additional answers.

I would recommend trying Prell shampoo. When we were younger I gave my brother a Mohawk using Vaseline while my mom was making dinner. Prell was the only thing that got the Vaseline out of his hair, it is sure to strip off anything in your daughters hair :)
