Same. We took a hit in my house....we're the exact image of this "K" recession we keep reading about. My husband's income not only went up, but he got a bigger bonus...my service business took a hit. When all of this first started we didn't know what would happen. When it became apparent that his job would be fine and mine would be impacted we thought our retirement savings would take a hit in 2020. Surprisingly, we hit our goals and even added to our cash "emergency fund". The only difference for us was that I couldn't get as much in to my Solo 401K on the "owner's side" of things because 20% of my profits for the year was much lower. So we put more in taxable accounts this year. I never would have thought this a year ago today.
The way this worked for us.....we literally didn't do anything. Our regular discretionary spending (not including travel...just normal monthly spending)....just plummeted. We didn't go out to eat. We didn't buy any clothes. We even went down from two cars to one. Our normal grocery spending was more than enough to pay for extras like the garden I put in last year...and to spruce up my back yard last year. Turns out a lot of our "grocery spending".....was really prepared foods. So if we were to get that check, we'd probably throw it into the "travel fund".....but with no trips on the books until we're vaccinated and see how things settle down, we wouldn't be doing with that money what we should be doing....spending it right away. And even that spending would likely take place in another country.
