Tricia - Why do they call them "crews"? Are they philanthropic organizations?

Some of the "Krewe's" are very philantrhopic but they are mainly the old time Krewe's. The one's you have to be born into or voted into like a snooty country club. Most of the new organizations are just all about partying and having a good time for their parade. As to why they call them Krewe's I'm not really sure. After each parade their is always an article in the local paper about the theme, king and queen etc. and Krewe of Eve, Krewe of Orphus is what is printed. I'll have to ask around and see what I find out.

QOTD - Where did your husband propose? Mr. FOP proposed during the fireworks display on the 4th of July at our local park. I was completely surprised!
