Sticking to Training Plan While in Disney

Hello! I'm wondering if you stick to your running training plan while you are vacationing in Disney. I have mixed feelings. Part of me really wants to run because it'll be fun to run in new places and I want to keep my training going. I'm slightly concerned about how tired I will be because of the heat/humidity and lots of walking. It's hard to wake up to get to rope drop, never mind to fit in a run. What do you do? Do you take the week off, stick to your plan, or reduce your mileage?

When my husband and I were at Disney last year for the Wine and Dine half we saw people all over the place running. We talked about it and decided that we had trained pretty well, we would be in the parks walking around and on the move all day so we didn't feel like we needed to dedicate time specifically to running. We were there for vacation as well. The half was two days away. We didn't feel like we'd lose any fitness in those two days. And we did just fine. We actually PR'd and finished faster than we had anticipated. I guess it all depends on how soon you are at Disney before your race. If you there more than a week before you may want to run a few times just to stay loose and limber.

More than anything we had a great time running the half. It was so fun!

Good luck!!:goodvibes

Using my fitbit for measurement and not counting any other exercise, at home I generally walk around 5 miles a day. A typical day at the parks is around 13 miles. Given the extra walking, I don't always feel like I have to do more, especially where I've had knee and hamstring injuries in the past.

That being said I will usually do something extra unless I'm in town for a runDisney event. If I'm at a low-mileage week, something consists of going to the fitness center and using the elliptical for 30 min. If it's a rD weekend and I'm at Disney, running goes out the window because I'm saving my legs for the race.

If I'm training and know I have a vacation in the mix, I'll build in extra weeks of training so if I decide my legs are too tired to do anything but walk around the park, I can get back to it the following week.
