I looked this up yesterday on the 10,000 steps a Day website. It said 2000 steps = 1 mile. (I'd imagine this is a usable estimate depending on a person's stride.)

Ok, I'm finally going to do it. I'm finally going to ask "the" dumbest question on the DIS boards. How DOES a pedometer work?? I just don't understand how something so small can tell how many steps you take or how many miles you've walked. Does it work by laser or something??

Well, I've heard the laser pedometers are really expensive and, frankly, quite dangerous! You know the FBI doesn't like lasers now so I'd watch out if I were you!
Seriously, though, this is not a dumb question! It's better to get in shape by asking! I have a pedometer that I bought at Sports Authority...really cheap - I think $10 dollars or something. You clip it onto your belt or waistband. (Just make sure it's not too tight against your waist). When you walk, the pedometer moves and the motion causes the pedometer to count. Thus, if the pedometer doesn't have a bit of "movement" room it won't count - hence, why you shouldn't have it right next to your skin. A daily goal is 10,000 steps a day. Go get one...I'm a teacher and it's a blast with the kids. They are always asking...how many steps have you gotten? Are you working out? They definately literally and figuratively keep me on my toes!
There's a small mechanism that counts your "bounces" throughout the day and assumes that each bounce is a step. Some are more accurate than others. I know my pedometer records 80 extra bounces during my commute (by car) to work.
The overall number though is a good way to track how active you've been throughout the day.
By the way, I've used my pedometer on several trails that have mile markers. A mile for me = 2250 steps. I guess I have a short stride - I'm 5'2".
I have a pedometer I use from time to time. Get one you can calibrate yourself. The first one I had used a standard stride length. It was not accurate on milage at all. The second one let's you set your stride length and with some playing around it is pretty accurate. When I take it on the measured walking trail it measures 1.05 miles for every actual mile.
Bought a pedometer today! Woo hoo! Not to make anyone jealous, but I will be tracking my mileage while actually at Disney! Once I get back I'll let you know how much I walked!

I just purchased a pedometer that clocks steps and distance.
From the factory, steps are calibrated at 30". You can adjust to your personal specs by counting the steps to walk a measured distance (i.e. 6 steps to cover 10 feet (120 inches) = 20" stride. My pedometer counts both steps and distance simultaneously, no need to calculate, and it utilizes a pendelum to record the steps.
Another example ... 1 mile (63360 inches) / 30" stride = 2112 steps.
