Steps involved with changing car owners?

I am in process of purchasing a new (used) car. I am giving my current car (2001 corolla) to my SO. My dad keeps telling me it is going to cost $1000 to change over the car to his name.

Can this be true? From what I understand, he just needs to re-register the car to his name, sign up for a new car insurance plan, & get a new license plate.

Will this really cost $1000? Am I missing a step in the process?

Are you and your SO married? Check the laws in your state. Here, in order to waive the fees involved, it has to be transferred between members of the immediate family--spouse, parents, siblings, etc.

In MI, I know there is some sort of fee if you choose to "sell" the car to someone. I know when my mom transferred the title to my first car over to me, you could say you were "giving" the car away and not "selling".

I think it all has to do with taxes. But then, doesn't everything! :rotfl:

You can gift the car to your SO. Check with your local DMV and they will tell you how much it is going to cost.

It won't be free of fees. It will depend on your DMV.

In Florida, we pay for transfer of title, new license plate (for the new owner), and sales tax if the vehicle was sold.

So if all that adds up to $1000 in your state, it might.

I gifted a camper to my friend and that is what they had to do. Cars would work similarly (but cost a little more on the tags).

Every state is different. In mine you can only gift to mother/father, son/daughter and possibly brother/sister that one I'm not sure on. That's all SO's do not count and would have to pay sales taxed based on the NADA value plus reg. fees.

That stinks. We can gift to anyone. I know FL you can gift a car because I looked that up for another poster.

OP, since I cannot see your state, go look it up. The info you need is probably online.
