I have wanted to purchase a steel drum for a long time. Do they sell instruments in Nassau in the marketplace?

I purchased one for my son in St. Thomas.....it was a small replica of one (but it worked) and cost about $40.00 for the small one...they also had a larger one for about $80.00. Just wanted to give you an idea of what they were running in St. Thomas. Don't know any places or prices for Nassau.

I know they sell them someplace at Nassau, because I asked a mom about it whose son was carrying one when we were disembarking.

You can also order one over the internet. My husband gave me one for my birthday two years ago. I love it. I think he did a search for steel drums which are really named steel pans. Isn't the internet great! I also found a lot of steel drum music by doing a search for it on Amazon.com and a google search. Kathy

We had read not too long ago that one of the best steel drum makers in the world was right here in our local area in Maryland. We have read several articles about them in our local newspaper. On our last DCL cruise, my DH was talking to one of the guys in the steel drum band on the ship and he said he bought his (or ordered them) from our local county, right here in Maryland! Small world.

Check out your local music store. If you purchase a steel drum off of the internet and there was something wrong with it who would fix it? Certainly not the local music store. They would probably just tell you to send them back to where you got them from. Give your local dealer a chance, you might have to pay a little bit more, but for peace of mind and the knowlegde you local dealer may have will far outweigh the difference in price. Quality is important and what I saw in St. Thomas was no more than the quality of a toy. If you want a steel drum that is in tune stick to name brands. You local music store really can help you.

Where are you and who is this drum making company?

There are lots of places online, catalogs music stores and toy stores that sell these. It will depend on how authentic you want it. As a band director, I have tons of catalogs that sell them. That is why I was asking the mom on our cruise.

Steel drums were actually developed from the bottom of oil barrels. Sections are "hammered" to produce a specific tone.

If you would like any catalog numbers/companies, let me know.

there are tons of them listed on eBay. Even some drums FROM the Bahamas. Check it out.

Thanks everyone for your input- I am aware of eBay and a few online places for steel drums- I have been watching prices for over a year - I just thought as long as I was in the Caribbean- it might be a good place to look. I want something cool and islandy (made up word) as a souvenier.
