I am in the process of making a pan of this and I have heard lots of people say they like it. It is looking like wall paper paste to me but I am determined to try and eat it. I am willing to give it another try but it takes too long to cook. Does anyone know how to make it in the crock pot so I could make it over night. ?

I like the steel cut much better than regular oatmeal, but it does take about 20-30 minutes to cook. That said, one batch makes like 4 servings so I eat one, put the other 3 in single serve containers and freeze them. Then when I want some, I pop the frozen lump of oatmeal into a microwaveable bowl, add a little water and nuke it for a couple minutes, stirring once in a while. I take these to work all the time so I can have my oatmeal for breakfast and not have to try and cook it at work. Good luck :)

mmm, love me some steel cut oatmeal! Add a bit of brown sugar and dried cranberries and I am in heaven!

Seems like it takes forever. I allow up to an hour to let it fully absorb the water. The consistency is similar to wallpaper paste, but there are supposed to be health benefits to this type of oats. I dump in quite a bit of Splenda, cinammon, raisins, walnuts, sometimes bananas, and milk. A large bowl of this in the morning and you'll eat less all day long.

Sorry I didn't answer your question about a crockpot, but wanted to give a :thumbsup2 for the steel cut oats.:)

Just an FYI, Trader Joes makes a quick cook steel cut oatmeal---best of both worlds:goodvibes

I've done the regular in the crockpot. 2 cups steel cut oats to 6-8 cups water. I added brown sugar, dried apples, craisins, and butter. Cook on low about 6 hours. It is very good, but I've never been able to keep it from sticking to the crock pot

Thanks to all of you who replied but OHIODISLOVER answered my question. I just finished eating it and I guess the problem is lack of addins. I ate it straight. I am going to try the crock pot thing but cut it in half. I wonder if I need to cut the time in half too? Anyone have a guess?

Here's another recipe out of my crock pot cookbook:

2 cups skim milk
2 tbsp honey or 1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp margarine
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 cup dry steel cut oats
1 cup chopped apples
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup fat-free half and half

Spray inside of slow cooker with non-fat cooking spray.
In a mixing bowl, combine all ingredients except half and half and pour into crock pot.
Cover and cook on low overnight, ideally 6-8 hours.
Stir in half and half just before serving.
Serves 4.
Per serving: 240 calories, 6 grams fat

I have never actually tried this recipe but my DH and I keep saying we're going to make it on a weekend.

Whenever I make this I make an extra large portion and keep the rest of it in the frige. It is good for several days, and to me this breakfast stays with me longer than any other. I do love lots of brown sugar on it, I don't think it would taste good without something mixed in!

That crockpot recipe sounds delish. I'll have to try that soon!

Keep a check on it, especially if you have a large size crockpot. One time I made a regular size batch in my crockpot and it burned. :scared1:

My box of McCann's says:

Boil 4 cups of water in a pot. Turn off heat and add one cup of oatmeal. Cover pot and leave overnight. The next morning cook the oatmeal on low for 9-12 minutes. Stir occasionally.

That's how we always make it. And it's usually enough for the three of us for 2 mornings.
