Stealing from your employer?

My first job was at Coca-Cola. I loaded many a cases into the cars of supervisors, foremen and managers. Myself, I probably consumed a lot but really can't remember ever carrying any home.

Years ago we couldn't figure out how computers were disappearing. We were in an old office building and had security covering every exit. Turns out it was a cleaning person. He would place the computer out on the fire escape and collect it later.

The first time we had cut backs we learned it was best to walk them to the door. We made the mistake of giving them notice. The day after they left we discovered 10 computers missing. Some of the downsized people had shipped them home...and we thought we had everything covered.

We had a payroll clerk that was skimming approved overtime pay off , and somehow diverting it to herself. Never more than 1/4 hour per person, and usually only people who had large amounts of overtime so they wouldn't notice they were missing a 1/4 hour of pay. She was skimming $2,000 a month this way.

That's small change. We had an accountant who approves the expense reports making out expense reports for ex-employees then approving, cutting the checks, and depositing the checks. He was busted at $1.5 million, but it was thought the number was much greater than that.

I used to do accounting work for a local restaurant. One of the closing managers used to steal enough food to start her own catering business! She was fired when she was caught.

I've seen ALL kinds of theft.

I used to work for a payroll processing company. I can tell numerous stories of company's calling and checking out the reports and firing payroll clerks.

I worked retail and saw tons and tons of theft by employees, managers and customers.

It's ridiculous!

I worked as a waitress for a hotel with a resteraunt/bar. The afternoon bartenders were roommates. Together they stole several thousand before they got caught. They were just not ringing up drink sales and pocketing the money. They got caught because they got greedy and started taking too much, they managers knew the bar had to be taking in something during the afternoon hours.

We had a person in the business office here steal several hundred from students. They paid in cash, she didn't post it and walked away with the money. ALWAYS ask for a receipt--tell your kids if they pay their college tuition, ALWAYS ask for a receipt.

In my child care center I had a parent steal but it was the fault of a scatterbrained staff member. The parent was paying tuition in cash. My staff person was writing a receipt and talking to the parent. When she handed the parent the receipt, she also handed her the money. (another parent witnessed it). The parent just walked out with the money and tried to accuse my staff person of stealing it.

I also had a father to steal my purse, I came in at 5:30 a.m. and opened and inadvertently left my purse sitting on a table just inside the door. I went in the kitchen to make sure things were ready for the cook to make breakfast and saw a car pull out of the driveway. He came in, got my purse and left with his child. :scared1: It really frightened me because I was alone when it happened. Installed a door bell and from then on, until one of my employees arrived, the parents had to ring the bell for me to let them in.

People around here take tape, staples, pens, pencils, copy paper, lables, etc. all the time.

OMG. I have to say I'm shocked. I had no idea this much theft regularly went on in today's businesses!

I feel bad if I accidentally bring home a pen!:rotfl: As a comm college English teacher, I frequently take a stack of papers home, sometimes with a red/purple pen for marking. Sometimes, I forget to bring these pens back to the office. Later on, I see them and feel guilty. Stolen goods!

I worked for Target while in high school, about a year after I left for bigger/better things I ran into an old co-worker. She told me one of the front end (cashier) supervisors had been arrested for stealing money from the cash counting room. Turned out she'd been doing it for a while. I'm not sure how she did it though, I know there was at least one camera in that room. She must have been good at slight of hand or something to get away with it for a while and not getting caught the 1st time she did it.

My DH also worked in loss prenvention at a Wal-Mart years and years ago. He said most of the employee theft would take place at the loading doc. They'd steal it right of the truck. Say a truck had a shipment of VCR's. They'd take one or two for themselves and the rest would go to the store. Then they did something with the paperwork to make it look like the shipment was short, and that the theft took place before the goods made it to the store. My DH and some of his co-workers in LP ran a sting in conjunction with the local police to catch them! :)
