Staying Well While Flying

I'm thinking about our flight that is coming in May. I haven't flown in about three years or so. I used to fly once or twice a year and almost every time I would end up getting sick after I arrived at WDW. I would usually start with a sore throat and end up with upper respiratory and sinus infections, then have to get a prescription to take while there. It doesn't happen if we drive so I am thinking flying is the culprit. Does this happen to anyone else, and if so, have you found anything that helps prevent it? TIA.

I totally understand. This is going to sound gross but before we get on the plane I use saline mist and coat the inside of my nose with vaseline or aquafor. It seems to create barrier of moisture and seems help.

Wash your hands frequently. Don't touch your face or eyes. Clean your tray table, arm rests and anything else you touch on the plane with a sanitizing wipe. Keep hydrated. If you are really concerned, you can wear a protective face mask.

I have never been sick after flying...and I fly at least twice a year, more like three or four times. I wash my hands often, I carry hand sanitizer which I use in flight. I keep my hands away from my face...unless I have just thoroughly washed them after flying. I drink lots of water, before, during and after flying. I use a saline spray nasally...helps keep things moist so the nose does it's job of keeping germs out.

Try something like Airborne of Emergen-C. Start a few days before an after for both legs of the trip.

We hand sanitize before touching snacks or drinks. The first stop after we land is the restroom to wash well. I also bring vitamin c hard candies to suck on instead of chewing gum.

I do wash my hands frequently and I always carry the sanitizing wipes and wipe everything down in my seat area. I also always carry and use hand sanitizer.

I haven't tried the saline mist and/or Vaseline so I guess I will try that this time and hopefully that will help.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm going to go way out on a limb here and suggest that most of the times that people get sick very early on their WDW trip is due to a germ they picked up at home. There aren't germs flying around inside that airplane cabin. If that were the case, FAs would be sick all the time.
If you use good hygiene you should be fine..at least as far as flying goes.

to pp that may not be the case, I worked for 20 plus years in daycare. most times a bug would run thru center and I would not get because I have had so many others. all the new staff would get bug and complain us old timers would not get it. I can see the same with FAs

If you don't mind the stares from others, get a mask. You can get them at like Home Depot or Lowest for doing staining or painting, that will keep a lot of the airborne things out of your system.

Absolutely pound the anti-oxidents, hydrate like you're in a desert and wash your hands and face like you have OCD.

And then pray.

LOL, love jeffbear's post. So true though!

Yes, it made me chuckle. It reminds me of what my sister told me once when I said "I just hate to fly." She replied, "Look at it this way, if the plane crashes, you're in Heaven. If it doesn't crash, you're in Disney World. There's no downside." :thumbsup2

That is so true, after 15 years in a preschool I almost never get sick. I can't even remember the last time anyone in my family took and antibiotic because they were sick(most "ick" that runs around is viral and an antibiotic won't help and taking them keeps your immune system from learning how to fight).

The FAs tend to wear gloves when working. As I said, I doubt they are subject to too many germs. I just don't believe there are all that many germs up there. Now, if you end up seated next to someone who is sneezing, coughing, and sniffling? Turn away...use that hand sanitizer, and for the love of God....keep your hands away from your face.

pro-biotics and multi-vitamins.... start taking them a week in advance. Not fool-proof, but may help.
