Staying warm at the MK?

We are heading to Disney in a week or so and are planning to go to the MVMCP. We will have someone with us that is disabled (she uses a power wheelchair full time) and can't regulate her temperature well...

I have a few questions for the experts...

Aside from the obvious things...warm clothes, hand warmers, layers, blankets, etc...

Do you guys have any suggestions for us?

I am particularly interested in these things...

1. Is First Aid open during the Christmas Party where she could go warm up?

2. Would there be anything they could put on a GAC to allow her to just park herself inside somewhere? Or will they just let her go in a store and hang out?

3. Are there any creative places we can go to get out of the cold?

4. She would like to watch the parade and Wishes - is there a way to accomplish that and not freeze? Which of the 3 HA Parade spots are the warmest? Does anyone know?

Do you guys have any other suggestions for helping her stay warm? :goodvibes

You're wise to plan for cold...Tonight I'm wearing my nice warm sweatshirt (28 degrees planned for Central Texas), purchased as an emergency buffer against the FREEZING!! wind chill that surprised the heck out of me after I landed at WDW in a years ago December after a nice warm Caribbean cruise. Take extra money to purchase warm fuzzy emergency warmth and layer, layer, layer. The holiday evening entertainment in the cold is brutal...don't forget the gloves, too. Even if you take refuge in a store or other indoor venue, the waits for transportation and crowd movement will have you freezing in an instant if you're not prepared...My thermostat has been out of whack for 43+ years and I still get caught unawares...freezing in Orlando? Who'd-a guessed?

1. Is First Aid open during the Christmas Party where she could go warm up?
First Aid is open whenever the park is open, so that won't be a problem. Plenty of room to just park and get warm and the staff are nice with things like that.
2. Would there be anything they could put on a GAC to allow her to just park herself inside somewhere? Or will they just let her go in a store and hang out?
That would not be needed. She can just park anyplace that is open and hang out.
I pulled up the MVMCP map from the DIS site - you want to be aware of what is open and for how long since some things will close before the end of the party. We found that out when we have gone to MNSSHP and expected more Quick Service Restaurants to be open.
There are 2 Quick Service Restaurants that will be open - both are very roomy and will be no problem with her just hanging out.
Cosmic Ray's in Tomorrowland
Pecos Bill in Frontierland

Because they are both large, make sure you know exactly where she is - just knowing she's in there will mean a bit of a hunt. Also, Cosmic Ray's has some entrances that are not accessible because of steps. She can get in on the side closest to the Teacups and the side closest to the Tomorrowland Transit Authority track. If she wants to listen to Cosmic Ray, sit in the area downstairs closest to the Teacups. If he annoys her (and he will after about 1/2 hour), the area up the indoor ramp toward the ordering areas are quiet.

Casey's Corner on Main Street is also open, but pretty small and getsx congested. The other eating places that are open are just snack bars without indoor seating.

Attractions that will be open where she could sit indoors (even if not going on the attraction):
Pirates of the Caribbean has a big covered entryway; maybe not heated, but out of the wind.
Hall of Presidents - people come in there just to sit for a while even when it's not a party in the cold. From there, she could dash out to watch the parade fairly easily or park on one of the bridges leading to the Castle circle area to watch the fireworks.
Mickey's Philharmagic - they may let her sit in the first waiting area even if she is not going into the show if she asks.
Same thing for Monster's Inc, although the last show of that is 9pm.

All the other open attractions don't really have a place to 'gather'.

They don't list the shops that are open, but for MNSSHP, all the Main Street Shops were open (and not that busy). The Tomorrowland shops were mostly open and the ones that a ride empties into at the exit, like the shop by Pirates and the one by Pooh.
3. Are there any creative places we can go to get out of the cold?
There is kind of a passageway between Frontierland and Adventureland near to the Magic Carpets of Agrabah. That is large and sheltered from the wind. It also has some large restrooms where she could take shelter.
4. She would like to watch the parade and Wishes - is there a way to accomplish that and not freeze? Which of the 3 HA Parade spots are the warmest? Does anyone know?
For the parade, none of the handicapped viewing areas are particularly sheltered - the Frontierland one has more buildings nearby, so may be warmer than the one by the castle. We have used the castle one several times for MNSSHP and it's not my favorite. It is very busy and since the whole area is curved, you can really only view the parade when it is right in front of you. Which one is warmer is also going to depend on which way the wind is blowing and how windy it is.
You will see all of the ground stuff for Wishes if you are in front of the castle (not directly in front, just somewhere in front). But, we have viewed Wishes from both Fantasyland and from Frontierland. Both are really nice - you still get the music and you get the fireworks so close you feel like you could touch. So, it's different than in front of the castle, but still really nice.
Do you guys have any other suggestions for helping her stay warm? :goodvibes
I agree with videogal that layers are really important. She needs to be able to take things off when she gets inside or she will overheat inside, sweat and then freeze even worse when she goes back out. Layers also trap air between them, so several thin layers are warmer than one thick layer (and I am in Minnesota where we had below zero temps today). Make sure she has a hat and possibly a scarf.
Fleece is nice because it traps air.
I don't know if you can get these in Florida, but space blankets are really nice. You may find them in the automotive department because people (at least here where it's cold) put them in their cars for emergencies. I've also seen them in stores that sell camping supplies.
They are reflective on one side and when that side is against your body, it reflects your body heat back at you, conserving heat.
Here's a kind of expensive one from REI to give you an idea. We bought some for less than $5, like these in Cabella's.
Most of those will also protect against some moisture.
That made me think of something else that might be easier to get ahold of in Florida - a poncho! They get pretty hot when you are wearing them in the rain because they trap some body heat. Not as well as the space blanket type things, but would be better than nothing.

I agree with the poncho. It keeps the wind from cutting through you.

Also if you look at sites that carry hunting equipment (like Cabela's) you should be able to find a vest that she could wear under a coat that is battery operated for heat. I have been thinking of getting one of those for myself. I hate getting chilled.

I understand that the Under Armour Cold wear is a good base layer and you can't go wrong with a good fleece jacket.

Get hold of a load of chemical heating pads! These can be a little pricey, but they last for hours and can be used easily out and about. They're normally sold for back pain, you can find them in just about any Pharmacy or drug store, and they produce heat by a chemical process caused by oxidation (i.e. they don't start heating up until you take them out of their vacuum-packed plastic bag). If she sticks one of them on the outside of her closest layer of clothing, in the small of her back, it should help keep her warm (so much of your blood flows through this point, that warming that will help warm you all over.

You can also get little chemical hand-warmers that you 'break' (like you do with glow-sticks) to make them warm up. One of these in each glove will help keep her hands warm. These are often re-usable, if you boil them on a stove for a while (follow instruction on the packet, don't just take my word for it!).

Another option would be to get wheat-bags and microwave them at the baby care stations (you might want to ask a CM about this first), just be careful with hygene issues for the next users. You can make your own using almost any dried grain (I've used rice to good effect) in a fabric bag or sock (please use a new one if you do this :scared1:). Just keep a close eye on it when you heat it, as a home-made one won't have any safety testing or heating instructions - take it out to shake regularly, watch it for any signs of smoke or discolouring of the fabric, and perhaps put a small cup of water in just in case (this makes the bag feel a little damp to the touch, but not soggy).

However you do it, having some heat source other than her own body heat, is pretty much a must. I've got some issues with body temperature, though not to the extent of your friend, and when I get cold my body takes ages to warm itself back up, no matter how many blankets I have on me! Hot drinks are good for this too, and seeing as they hand out cocoa anyway, she'll have a ready supply of that. Of course, you need to make sure she doesn't over-heat either, because it's easy to transition from too cold to too hot very quickly.

To get inside, you can use any store that's open; go to a restaurant for a drink, snack or just to sit down; go into a show or ride; or just duck into the ladies' for a while (not, perhaps, the most fun to hang out in :rotfl:).

As for parade viewing, we like the one in Liberty Square. With this one you could always grab a space early, then leave someone saving it while she goes into Hall of Presidents for a bit of warmth (explain what you're doing to the CM in that area, before she leaves, or you might be asked to relinquish your spot). If you get there early enough, you can get a space in front of the low wall, which will be easier to save than the spaces either side, and have the added bonus of giving the others in your party somewhere to sit!

Hope this helps! :thumbsup2

Yeah...I have one of those "Disney" jackets, too. :rotfl2: Of course, now I wear it all the time - just to prove to my friends how much of a Disney freak I am, I suppose. :rotfl:

We have shipped a box of warm stuff ahead of us already...gloves, scarfs, light and heavy jackets and a few blankets.

Being from MS - it is rarely cold.

She even wears full sweaters to church because it is "cold" in there! She really gets chilled easily.

First Aid is open whenever the park is open, so that won't be a problem. Plenty of room to just park and get warm and the staff are nice with things like that.

This is GREAT to know! It is a great location in the MK, too...so we will probably camp out there some. We will need to go there twice anyway to do breathing treatments and take care of bathroom junk.

That would not be needed. She can just park anyplace that is open and hang out.

This is a great idea! I have printed this map and circled everything that is "inside"...

One question...is the queue to Space Mountain accessible? She won't ride...but she could wait in line with us?

Cosmic Ray's in Tomorrowland
Pecos Bill in Frontierland

I love Pecos Bills!!!

Because they are both large, make sure you know exactly where she is - just knowing she's in there will mean a bit of a hunt.

We all plan to have our iPhones...mostly because they would have be surgically removed from us to NOT bring them. :rotfl: And she will have someone with her 100% of the time because of her seizures. I am basically going as her nurse, so I will be with her most of the time, I figure.

This is great information! I never pay attention to steps when I am walking around.

Casey's Corner on Main Street is also open, but pretty small and getsx congested. The other eating places that are open are just snack bars without indoor seating.

I might have to get myself a Casey's dog...but Rachel won't go in there...that place is a madhouse!

Attractions that will be open where she could sit indoors (even if not going on the attraction):

Same thing for Monster's Inc, although the last show of that is 9pm.

These are all great suggestions! We could watch Philharmagic over and over! And if we want a nap, we can check out HoP! :rotfl2: (Just kidding - I like the new version!)

And shopping!

I am trying to picture this? I don't think I know where this is? But we can find it! :)

4. She would like to watch the parade and Wishes - is there a way to accomplish that and not freeze? Which of the 3 HA Parade spots are the warmest? Does anyone know?

This is a great point. I don't really like being on the hub since it is a circle and you can't see well. We will either do the one at the front of the park or Frontierland. We may do Frontierland just to be "done" first...she may head back after the first parade. (Which is not ideal...we wanted to try to catch the later parade)...

You will see all of the ground stuff for Wishes if you are in front of the castle (not directly in front, just somewhere in front). We are bringing ponchos! It would be bad if it rained...if it rains and she gets wet, all bets are off for the evening. The same for getting all sweaty...although I don't really think she has issues with that at home and she wears these thick sweaters all the time.

Thank you so much for your help!

I think she will be excited to see this list!

Ah...that vest sounds AWESOME! And I love Under Armour!

Thank you all for your help!! We really can't wait! We are really going to DISNEY!!!!! :yay:

I recommend going to the camping section of Dick's sporting goods/sports authority/cabelas/walmart

They have lots of "camp" blankets and ponchos and hand/foot warmers that I find very useful. I too use a wheelchair full time, and i know how cold it can get!

Has she ever tried flight socks? They're supposed to help promote circulation to your feet, which will keep them warmer. Just an idea!

I saw that you weren't sure where the breezeway mentioned is, and I'm actually trying to visualize where a large breezeway with restrooms is between Frontierland and Adventureland, but I I think the one referred to is actually the one between Liberty Square and Frontierland, which connects to Adventureland. It's right next door to the Diamond Horseshoe, which is the big blue building on the lefthand side if you're walking through Liberty Square toward Frontierland. I used to work in Liberty Square, so I used to have to tell people to go there for the bathroom all the time :rotfl:

Yes, that's the one.
It is hard to describe where it is.

Thank you guys for your help with this!!

I will let you guys know how it goes and any other tips we try that work - maybe it will help someone else in the future, too!

Yes, that's the one.

 Yay for being MK custodial  But yeah, it's hard to describe where it is, and I can't tell you how many times people had no idea what I was talking about. It was easiest just to say "Make a left at the big blue building."

Socks - both inside her shoes and then a pair of nice mens woolen socks OVER her shoes or a pair of neoprene "boot gloves". I also use a polar fleece lap robe around my legs, double layer parka, fleece hat, scarf and gloves.

We are at WDW right now and it's HOT!!!! Hopefully the OP had a great time and didn't have to worry about being chilled- not sure when they were planning to go or if they've been yet. We went to the MVMCP on Friday ( Dec 11th) and our only problem was that it was sold out and packed- and we had light drizzle during the first parade which we were skipping anyway. We headed indoors to the Crystal Palace where they had the hot chocolate, juice, and cookies set up. There was also apple juice and apple slices being served and a sign up mentioning special products were available for those with allergies.---Kathy

We had a FABULOUS time!

We had the most blessed vacation in so many ways, including the weather!

Our MVMCP night had temps in the 60's the whole time we were at the party!

There was a big threat of rain (70% chance of rain and heavy rain/thunderstorms), but it held off except for a few sprinkles.

I think the threat of rain kept many people away from the party that may have otherwise attended and simply made our night! The party was not crowded at all and we had a wonderful time!

There was also a Make a Wish child there that night that had a wish to meet the Gingerbread Men. To make a long story short - his wish was granted! And I have pictures that I will post as soon as I can sort them out! (I took a LOT of pictures of the whole event!)

Thank you all so much for all of your tips - hopefully someone else will be able to search for them in the search engine and find this helpful thread! And I am very thankful we did not need them.

We had one chilly morning on our last day there and it felt really cold and was in the upper 40's - 20 mph winds - so we did use the hand warmers for Rachel that morning and she wore a poncho to cut out the wind - so your tips helped us for that one chilly morning!

Thank you all for your help!
