I wa always under the impression if you stay on property you dont have to pay for theme parks

No you don't have to pay for parking if you are an onsite guest. Doesn't matter if you're a DVC member, just as long as you're staying onsite.

The resort gives you a placard/notice for your dashboard dated until your check-out day.

I'm thinking the posts you read were probably from DVC members staying off-site. People often ask if they can get free parking at the parks simply by showing their DVC card.

As BroganMc said, as long as you are staying onsite, at a WDW or DVC resort, parking is free.

The only parking DVC members pay for is valet at the regular Disney resorts. Even that is free at DVC resorts. All people staying on-site get free parking at the parks.

You just need to show your room key, not your DVC card to get free parking at the parks. Or, if you have an AP, free parking is included with that, as well.
