stay & scream tickets

Do you have to purchase stay & scream tickets for halloween horror nights on the same day or can you get them in advance ?

We are going to IOA in the first couple of days of our vacation & want to get stay & scream tickets while we are there for a night later in our vacation just in case they sell out for that night, we have 4-park flex tickets so will be in the park in the afternoon of the 2nd visit anyway.
Does anyone know if this is possible?

Good question.... I think that is possible, but I'm not sure.

You can purchase HHN tickets right on the universal website where you purchase regular tickets. You may want to do HHN the same day as IOA though, as if you are at IOA when they close at five and have HHN tickets, you can stay at the park and do some of the houses early and some of the rides with no one else in the park. Trust me, the houses they open early (two when i was there) are much better because you walk through virtually alone, where when the crowds are there and the cues long, you see everything coming and it is kind of lame. If any way possible, do IOA and HHN the same day and take advantage of this. Eat dinner while the park closes at five in the enchanted oak or one of the restaurants at jurassic park, and do the two houses.

I asked this when on the phone with Universal. I was told "maybe". They "might" sell you Stay and Scream for the following night if you have already activated your park passes that are only good through the time that you plan to go to Stay and Scream. (Like the pay for 2 stay for 5 day Bonus passes) If you have the type of pass that doesn't expire then you cannot prepurchase a Stay and Scream pass.

BTW, since I already ordered my Bonus passes online several weeks ago, I was not allowed to later add the Stay and Scream to my purchase. To purchase online, you need to buy your Stay and Scream pass in the same transaction as your regular park pass.
