SO if I purchase a stay and scream ticket...will I have to stand in the stay and scream section until 6:30 when HHN opens...or can I ride rides at universal studios until that time? The park closes at 5pm so would I have to stand there an hour and a half?>

The problem I've had with eating at Finnegan's during S & S is a slow wait person. We weren't released on time because we were waiting for the check and by the time we paid, there was already quite a line for the S & S house. So...I won't be eating there during S & S again. You won't have to stand for an hour and a half
The stay and scream chordoned off area is has access to Finnegan's. You can grab a meal or a drink and chill and sing along to the live music before the event starts.
It's quite fun... and no, you won't be able to wander off and ride the attractions...
Cheers!

Usually you can have two houses down and be near the front of the line for the third by 6:30. Trust me, being able to knock out three houses early is a huge advantage.
7:00? Ouch! Thank you for the warning, I didn't know that could happen. In the same vein, my plan doesn't work so well if Universal lets your holding area out late and opens the gates at the same time (like they did to us that Sunday). Still, it's good to have a plan, even if you run into a snag like that.
Don't worry...I will report what happens on opening night as always.
i'm sure someone will post about which houses have the delayed entry.
then you can revise your plans.
