hi all,

We are booked on a DCL from NYC next October and we are spending a few days in New York beforehand. I'm wondering how good the view from the cruise ship will be of the Statue of Liberty, and whether it is worth us either taking the Staten Island Ferry to view it or booking a trip across to climb the crown?

I've been to NYC before and seen the SOL, but this is my childrens first time. We are limited on time, so would skip it if the view from the cruise is at least as good as the Staten Island ferry, but would make time if the cruise is hit or miss, as it's obviously one of the main things in NYC for us to show our boys.

Many thanks for any advice

If you are only looking to see the statue you do get a pretty good view of her when you pass. If you want an up close and personal view or if you want to go inside you obviously have to take the ferry over.

This was taken in September when we went to Bermuda out of Manhattan on NCL. It's also pretty awesome that you get to go under the Verrazano Bridge.

That's an awesome view, thank you for posting!

I guess thats confirmed that I don't need to do the staten Island ferry, I'll just see how my itinerary is fixed as to whether we visit the island and climb the statue itself.

Thanks again for your quick reply x

DSCN0756.JPG DSCN0757.JPG DSCN0760.JPG Funny, my parents are on a NCL cruise that they boarded at noon and they are just about passing the SOL now (was watching on the webcam). Above poster is correct. You get to see the SOL but it is from a distance (unless you are looking through a good zoom lens)DSCN0756.JPG DSCN0757.JPG DSCN0760.JPG . To really experience the SOL you need to actually visit it.

We have cruised out of NYC many times, most recently during the EBTA in May. The weather was not so great when we passed this last time.

It's worth the trip across to climb it. While she is beautiful from afar, she is its so impressive up close. I try and make a trip over every time we go to NYC even if we don't climb.

Thank you everyone (especially MJ for posting those terrific photos!:thumbsup2) - I have decided I will definitely allow enough time during the land portion of our visit to climb the crown - it might be a once in a lifetime trip to NYC for us and the boys, so I want to do it right!:thumbsup2

If you are interested in visiting the crown, be sure to get these tickets months in advance. They go fast, as they are very limited. Otherwise, booking tickets to the platform can be done a few weeks in advance. My advice is to book an early morning visit, before it gets very crowded.

Also, don't skip the stop at Ellis Island. The NPS ranger led tours are fantastic! I have visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island on 3 occasions and each time it has been a very moving experience. My grandfathers came through Ellis Island from Poland, and to think I have stood on the exact spot (perhaps) they stood on when they came to the United States is a special experience!

I walked up the Statue of Liberty as a kid and have been living in NY since an older teen. I actually work in Brooklyn a block from the water where you can see the SOL. It's cool but I guess I'm pretty used to it here by now.

2 of my nephews while visiting toured One World Trade Center and seeing their videos and feedback, I would HIGHLY recommend you visit there. If you buy tickets online in advance you can skip the usually long line outside.

It's right there at Ground Zero. The outside is very well done, like the 2 buildings were inverted into the earth. I do oppose the charge for the museum. I think it was important to make that free and accessible to all, but to each their own.

Agreed. It is a shame so much politics got into it !
