Statue of Liberty crown-NO WAY!

We have crown tickets for September. I am afraid of heights, but I'm okay if stairs are inside. Are the spiral stairs next to a wall on one side or is there air on either side of the stairs?

Tempted to do this for our visit in December, but I used to get dizzy with piral staircases if they had a void in the middle!

Claire ;)

Well I think it's long overdue for them to open it up. I went in December and was really disappointed we couldn't go up!

The windows will not be open to the general public. They let the Today Show do it as a way of letting everyone know the crown is open again.

Me too! :scared: I went on a Brownie trip when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade, but there were a group of us who didn't make it to the top. Heck...I was already nauseous from the ferry ride. :scared: (It's so hard being a weenie!)

I can sooo relate!! It is nice to have weenie friends!!!!:rotfl2::hug::dance3:

You can take an elevator up to the pedestal so save your straight for the crown lol... I took my girl scout troop last year and though I was going to die by the time I walked up to the pedestal.

I looked into getting tix for my family. Buying tix this last week, the earliest we could have gotten crown tix would have been Sept. Then, we have a half hour drive to the train station, 1.5 hr. train ride, and a subway ride to get close the pier. And the info. on the website says to expect a 1.5 hr wait at the pier (which has a security checkpoint?), then the ferry ride, and a wait (with another security checkpoint) to get into the statue. I figure a minimum of 4 hours each way for us. Plus the walk to get into the crown which I'm not sure we'd be able to finish with a 5 and 7 year-old who'll be exhausted just from the 4 hours of traveling. And then the trip to get back home. :scared1:

Maybe in a year or two... if we stay the night in NYC first.

We have tickets for late September and the kids are beyond excited! I can't wait to go up!:goodvibes

I work at Ellis Island, and just came back from the staff 4th of july bbq... I talked with a few of my co-workers who were at the Statue today, and they said the crowds were INSANE today. There were also alot of angry tourists who thought they could get up to the crown just by showing up to the Statue.

And yes, as someone had pointed out, the windows are not actual open to the public. It was a publicity stunt for the Today Show.
At some point this summer, I might go up to the crown, and if they allow staff (which they have in the past), up to the torch. It's slightly dangerous still, but that would be awesome. :)

I am SO excited!

I went once years ago when I was a Nanny (lived up there). Now I am trying to plan a trip back up soon with my girls so they can experience it too. I am worried about waiting too long in case they close it again.

Plus now we we can look for Dh's Grandma and Grandpa's names in Ellis Island.

DH and I went to NYC last December (2007) and we went first thing in the morning. Sailed through both security checkpoints, shorter than the airport thats for sure...

Our problem came when the waves were so high they wouldn't let the ferry move... we sat on it for hours waiting for the OK to go. We missed Ellis Island because we had tickets for How The Grinch Stole Christmas and we were afraid if we looked around Ellis Island and the waves picked back up, we'd lose our tickets.

Ooohhhhohohoooo Nooohohohooooo...

Not this little chickadee... just reading this thread scares the poo outta me :scared1: :scared:  :scared1: :scared:

If you do, be sure to take lots of pics and post 'em, if you don't mind! I've always wondered how incredible the view must be, and just what the darn thing looks like inside.

I went up in the late 70s on a high school trip -- don't recall the view being anything particularly exciting, especially after that climb, but I'm sure I was a jaded teen, so maybe it's quite nice!

I do remember the climb, though.

It is already sold out until November.

I read this on July 4th and panicked because I was waiting to buy tickets for our October trip until the crown was re-opened, then just forgot when the time came! But -- I was able to go online and secure tickets for mid-October for DH and I to go up to the crown. So, anyone reading this -- by all means check the date you want 'cause if it's not a real busy day (like a weekend) you still might be able to get tickets. :)

Afraid of heights and claustrophobia.. No way I could do that!

It is very tight up there!! I have done it numerous times as a child during the summer (SWELTERING). Too many people...your face is in their butt!! I have no desire to do it again!
