We will be cruising on the Dream later this year in a cat 8B Deluxe Family Oceanview stateroom.

Does anyone know how WIDE these staterooms are ?

I believe most staterooms are a standard width and that is it primarily the length that varies, so the width of another category similarly shaped should work or be close :-)

We are trying to figure out if the cord length for a medical device is sufficient or not. It will need to reach from the plugs at the desk across to about the start of the couch, dropping to the floor of course. It is not supposed to be used with extension cords, so are thinking of alternatives if the cord won't be long enough. First time we've had to travel with it.

Thanks,

SW

it is 256 sf for a deluxe verandah room vs 203 sf for a regular verandah room and I've read they are 5' longer which would make both about 10'7-8" or so wide.

There are also outlets on the nightstands I think and it may be a shorter run from nightstand to the foot of the couch than across.

There are outlets on both sides of the bed. This picture isn't real obvious, but it's the outlet under the little shelf at the side of the bed.

Lisa thank you for the math and both you and Princess Shmoo for the outlet at nightstand info. I hadn’t thought of running it that way and it may end up being shorter.

Basically the device user will be sleeping in the Murphy bed so it needs to make it to near there. My sister did point out we could just have them make the bed up the other way around if nothing else works ;-).

Btw I wrote to DCL and asked the room width and though they replied in under 24 hours they couldn’t give me that info :-(

Well, the distance from the bedside outlet to the murphy bed would be the length of a twin bed. Probably a better option, also, since then the cord wouldn't be lying across an open space on the floor. You could run it in front of the couch on the floor, or across the sofa, next to the wall.

You should also check and see if you can use a heavy duty extension cord with it. I am thinking that they don't want people using $1 extension cords but an appliance extension cord rated for a full 15-20 amps would probably be alright. But I am not an electrician or expert on medical devices.

Unfortunately the user guide for the equipment is clear: no extensions cords are to be used.

DCL won't let you bring on your own extension cord -- they'll seize them and hold them until the end of the cruise if you do. However, they have a limited number available that they will loan to guests who need them, subject to availability. We have made use of that on a previous cruise for a different medical device.

I may contact the manufacturer of this device and confirm that no extension cords at all, or are we ok with the ship provided/inspected by their Chief Electrician cord [i.e. it is in good condition and safe, not a cheapo one of dubious provenence].

How about having the user sleep in the sofa bed with head toward the queen bed? That way the outlet is right there.

Unfortunately we've tried her sleeping in the sofa bed and she finds it uncomfortable -- its why we are in an 8B with murphy bed instead of the HUGE sideways 8A cabins [which we LOVE but the sofa bed was too uncomfortable for her].

Worst case we'll put her head @ the foot end of the murphy bed that way the desk and its plugs are right there.

But will try the string it along the sofa option and the string it across the width of the room options first.

How long of a cord do you have now? How close does the equipment have to be to the person? Does it sit on the floor or go right up to her? I would say that a queen bed is roughly 80 inches long, and then add walking space, no more than 3 feet and probably less. I bet if your cord was 11 feet, you'd have no problem. But you want the minimum, so those other questions will come into play.

Excellent questions.

It has to be basically right beside the bed near the head, and can't sit on the ground. Since she will use the murphy bed, our plan was to put the "coffee table" in front of the couch, right beside the murphy bed and it can sit on that.

I LOVE your queen bed + a few feet math !!! :-)

I believe the cord is 9 feet long [will have to measure to double-check]. Using your queen bed+ math that should be ok though may be at the limit.

So even if you plug it in on the other side of the sofa, at the bedside plug, you'd have enough play, since the sofa is a twin mattress (75 inches). That might work better, in case she has to get up for the bathroom at night. You don't want her tripping.

Yep. I think youre right that string it along the sofa will be the best option.
