My 14yo DD told me yesterday that her math class (along with all the other 8th gd classes) will be reviewing for the TAKS test for the next 4 weeks! They are doing it as a survivor game format and have been put into teams. They'll take tests and the team with the highest score at the end of the challenge wins.
Sounds like a fun and interesting approach, However my DD is in pre-AP math, they are doing Algebra this year which the regular ed classes will take next year. Instead of learning anything new they are going to review 8th grade math for a month! If the kids in pre-AP math can't pass the test than that is a huge issue. These kids are right now considered to be a grade level ahead in the subject and will have many more math options in HS.
Not a fan of standardized testing, I can see spending a few days doing review to make sure there isn't something that they've forgotten but a month???
