State tax return-refund is more than what you filed

We received our State Income Tax refund check today. It is $340 MORE than what we filed.

Is this most likely an error on the states part or on the accountants? DH is going to call the state office tomorrow to make sure they meant to send us that much money. We don't want to have to owe in a few months.

If this is an accounting error I am going to hav them redo our other taxes because that is a BIG error!

Has anyone had this happen before? It makes me nervous!

I have no idea if it is an error or not but I don't think I would spend that money until I found out

It could be something that you overlooked and they caught. Confirming with them is the best idea. I remember when I first started working that I got more back from NY State because of some allowance for lower pay that I has overlooked.

We definitely are not going to spend it until we call them.

We had an accountant do our taxes. This is the second accounting error we have had in our 4 year marriage (different firms.) The first one we ended up OWING $3000! So we are VERY leary now.

Did they send you a letter of explanation. We just got done with this but it was with the irs. they ended up sending us lots more money. It wasnt an error on our accountants part, but on their part from something they owed us before and never gave us. I guess they finally caught up with us. Hope all goes well for you.

No, there was no letter of explanation. DH called this morning and she said the money was ours. She even looked at our file and said there were no changes to our file. This is the first year we have filed in WI.

Our accountant is on vacation until next week. We will be calling her and ask her to look at our taxes again.

In the mean time I am using the $$$ for our trip to WDW!

If there was a mistake in your return, Wisconsin would of send a letter of explanation if there was something wrong on the paper work.

You said you called the State of Wisconsin, they are usually very helpful, but I would get the ladies name and date it they day you called and talked with her.

Welcome to Wisconsin, the highest income tax, property tax, county tax, sales taxes around. And all the little hidden tax like garbage bags or dumpsters you have to use for garbage pick-up, you don't even get credit for. Don't even think about retiring in Wisconsin, they take over 1/2 your pension in taxes.
