We have booked 2 rooms at the Swan for our trip in July. We stayed at the Dolphin last summer and earned about 1,300 points. I seemed to remember reading somewhere that our points will expire after a year. Does anyone know if this is the case? I looked on the spg.com site, but didn't see anything.

We have a reservation, but our next trip is going to start about a week later than our last trip ended (hope that makes sense). Will I lose our current points?

We ran into this problem. This advice is based on what the person on the phone at SPG told us, but I would call them to make sure.

They do have an expiration date. I'm not sure how it's figured, but it seems to be a year after your last stay with them. Maybe if you stay with them again the date moves.

Either way, we just booked using them now to avoid losing them. Once you book the room the points are used, it's not based on when you actually stay.

From the Starwood web site (http://www.starwood.com/preferredguest/terms_conditions.html)

"You will be considered an "Active Member" so long as you have earned Starpoints as a result of activities at participating Starwood Properties or as a result of use of the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express during the previous twelve months."

"In the event you do not remain an Active Member (as defined above) your membership account will be closed and all Starpoints forfeited. "

So from this it would appear yes they will expire if you go more than 12 months without adding points to the balance.

I hope this helps

Just booking/having a room reserved does not add qualifying points to your account. The points do not add in until after your stay.

I was in the same spot earlier this year. Last qualifying points were in 4/03. Had stay coming up 5/03. Called starwood to ask if was in danger of losing my points and explained about the May reservation. At that time I had over 30,000 points racked up. The guy reset my active membership period right then to 5/05.

So call Starwood...

Another thing you could do is if you have a Sheraton or Westin or etc. around you, go to the cafe for lunch! That counts as earning points and is a fairly inexpensive way to keep your points active.

Thanks there is a Sheraton and a Westin in areas of Kansas City that we often frequent. I will stop by for lunch.
