Starting Topamax this weekend for migraines

Pixie dust would be so appreciated! Hoping I do NOT have the horrible possible side effects...esp the memory loss/stupidity and nausea and loss of appetite.

Pixie dust is on its way! I was on Topomax for a short time a few years ago, it wasn't for me. I hope it works out for you, I know how frustrating it can be!

I've been on it for a few weeks now. The stupidity isn't any worse than it was on Depakote. The worst side effect for me is the INTENSE tingling in my feet and hands. It almost feels like I'm being electrocuted.

Good luck! I hope it works for you! I had to stop taking it for the very reasons you listed. The loss of appetite one wasn't so bad though!

Just found this, VERY glad I'm trying a preventative med:

Treatment of migraine has usually focused to alleviating pain - sufferers often take non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as aspirin or paracetomol - and it is estimated that less than 20% of migraine sufferers who need preventative treatment actually receive it. The new findings suggest that those who suffer from migraines should try to prevent their headaches altogether, to minimize the possibility of brain damage.

Thank you so much. It's a crazy busy time at work, so the memory loss could be a big problem if it happens.

Best of luck with the treatment! My dear doc has been trying to convince me to start Topamax. She also is pretty certain that me comming off my maintainence meds (Toprol) will probably mean a banger of a migraine before I'd be able to start it. That, has been enough to keep me from giving it a try. Please update this post with your progress. From one migraine sufferer to another, successful therapy for one of us is a cause for celebration by all! Here is wishing you relief from those awful headaches!

DW was on a couple of years ago. Don't be afraid to ask your significant others around you how they perceive you. I was afraid to tell DW about her moods at the risk of upsetting her, but there were very subtle but drastic changes in her overall mood, easily upset, emotional. The kids noticed it before I did when they came home from college. I wish you well. She is on a med now which she takes when she senses the onset of a migraine and that's been effective for her.

DS has been taking it for a couple of years now, and his only side effect was a tremble in his hands that sometimes becomes problematic--he takes another drug as needed when that happens (2-3 days every 2-4 months.)

His migraines have all but completely stopped!
