So now that I can see as well as others I toyed with the idea of getting a license

But there is the cost of a car

Gas

Insurance

Am I missing anything

Depends if you're buying or leasing.

But typical maintenance items you'll have to worry about over the life time of the vehicle are breaks, tires, and of course oil changes periodically throughout the year. There are other long term things that you may have to maintain after longer term usage at the 80-120k mile range too that depends on the car as well.

Then there are registration fees with your state (every few years at some low amount of money, I just re-did mine at $30 a pop I think).

I think it depends on where you live too. Some areas, it's hard to find parking and it's just easier to use services like Lyft/Uber or use public transportation.
My son lives in an area where the roads are on steep hills and can be narrow and curvy (Morgantown, WV.) I hate driving when I go to visit him and would rather walk for miles!

Just because you have driver's license doesn't mean you have to own a car. I have a license but don't own a car.

If I ever need a car, I simply rent one. Of course, I'm within walking distance of 4 rental locations and a bus ride to a major international airport with all the rest. Being on the Space Coast, you probably don't have those easy options.

But for me, the cost of renting a car and paying for insurance for each rental is tiny compared to the cost of purchasing/maintaining/operating a car.
