I am interested in learning to knit and I was wondering what would be the best way to learn. Is there some good books are there or what about any good knitting websites? Also do you have any advice for a beginner? Any help would be greatly appreciate!!! :D

We introduced our Girl Scout troop to knitting when they were in second grade (yes we really did) and found a couple of websites that had step by step directions with LOTS of pictures. However, we also had a couple of older ladies (grandmas) that came in to help with hands on assistance.

That was several years ago though and since then I know I have seen some really cute looking books on knitting at the big bookstores/websites.

I picked up a book at a Ben Franklin while on vacation. I must iadmit that it was more for a refresher, but I think you would have no problem doing it on your own. Meijer and other stores tend to have kits with books and needles too. Good luck!

I learned through a website and books as an adult...though I had learned to knit from my great grandmother when I was a child. I really think what book or website is helpful to you will depend on your way of learning. I would guess there are people out there who really need to have help from an experienced knitter too.

I have "how to knit" by Debbie Bliss...mainly because I liked the patterns in the book. I've found her descriptions of the actual process of knitting a little confusing, but knew enough to get through.

You could try starting with a kids book...."kids knitting" by Melanie Fallick is rather good...also shows you how to make your own knitting needles!

Oh, what I reminder...I need to finish the scarf I'm making for my mom!

Just a suggestion- start with large needles( # 10) and a light colored yarn. It is easier to see your stitches. Use a worsted weight yarn to practice the stitches before attempting to use a fancy, expensive yarn that can be harder to hold. I use knitting for stress relief. It can be very relaxing to do a repetitive stitch.

Some towns have a Knitters Guild that offfer classes or sometmes a community college will offer cheap classes. Also if you belong to a church you may want to talk to some of the older ladies to see if they knit. I am not saying that ONLY older ladies KNit because that is not true but older ladies may be more experienced and would love the chance to sit down with someone and chat while teaching them to knit.
