(bear with me for a relatively brief build up here....)

When I joined the DIS boards in 2000, we were about 6 months away from the "once in a lifetime" trip that we'd scrimped and saved for for several years to Walt Disney World.

My name on the boards was WDWNovice and I felt overwhelmed at figuring out all of the ins and outs of our 4 day trip.

(Side note: Michael Cognovich, wherever you are, that extra reservation (pre-Priority Seating days) to Cinderella's castle for breakfast you gave me, thanks to this board, made you the hero of that trip!)

When we returned, my name changed to the terribly long "WDWNovice, Novice no More", which was not only terribly long, but just terrible all around.

When the boards changed servers, I was alerted by the tech guys the length of the name had to go and, if I would choose something shorter, I could keep my join date and post count, etc.

And thus DemonLlama was born.

(As you can tell by my post count, I'm not exactly a chatty cathy. Okay, each post might be a novel, but I don't write a million of them...)

And, like so many of you, "once in a lifetime" turned into "how often can we get back?"

From 2000 to 2010 every other year at Christmas we took our two kids, Nick and Sam, for about a week, the longest trip at 8 days, the shortest (in 2000) at 4.

By the third trip I was helping everyone we knew plan WDW vacations.

We always said we'd keep doing this while the kids were still at home.

My Nick left for college this year.

Sam, however, has made it known long and loud over our weeping and gnashing of teeth for his absence, that indeed SHE is still here and 2012 is the next cycle for a Disney trip, so let's get crackin'!

Since we moved to Colorado from Houston in 2007, the last two trips were decidedly more expensive on airfare and we began to allow the thought.... what about California? It's a different adventure for our newly changed family unit of 3 so it wouldn't be as hard to miss Nick at so many of "our" places around WDW.

So, last night we made the leap and booked a stay at Disneyland for Oct. 10-14. We'll fly in early Wed. and out late Sunday.

And suddenly I feel like a novice all over again.

I've already started reading threads, bookmarking and copying and pasting, like any good DIS addict.

But . . . .

I'd love to hear the ONE best thing you'd advise someone like myself, who knows WDW all over the place and has only begun to imagine a trip to Disneyland, what's the best thing(s) to do/plan/experience/not-miss?

thanks in advance! :goodvibes

#1 Tip: Read Hydroguys Tips for WDW Vets

Other useful info:
*It's not WDW so expect something new. (advice I'd wish I'd taken after our first trip to WDW as DL vets)
*Must ride rides: Pirates, Indy, Mr. Toad and Alice. And since you are going at Halloween: Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy and Haunted Mansion Holiday.
*Fantasmic is so much better in DL
*Don't expect to be able to make touring plans 6 months out. You'll be lucky if your entertainment schedule is complete at 4 weeks out. Hours will be posted at 6 weeks. Fireworks and Fantasmic! will only show on weekends (Sat-Sun if Halloween parties are on Fridays).

From your dates there will be probably 1 halloween party (most likely Friday) and DL will close at 7pm. We love the Halloween parties, but there is no Boo To You parade (yet) in DL so that may be a disappointment if you are used to MNSSHP.

Oh wow, only one? Hmmm... Uhhhh......That is a hard one.

I will go with World of Color because it is so completely different than anything you have seen at WDW.

A good tip for WDW vets seems obvious but still seems to trip up lots of WDW vets - DLR is not WDW. Lots of WDW vets will agree to the obvious, and then start nit-picking the things about DLR that are different and (unspoken but an undercurrent you can sense) inferior - because they are different.

No dining plan at DLR! Wow, DLR must be a lower quality resort...Well, no. DLR caters to different folks who do not value dining the way WDW vets do. So a dining plan just does not work.

No Magical Express? Why doesn't DLR get its act together like WDW? Well, WDW has more pull over a single relatively small airport in Orlando. DLR has less pull over major airports like LAX and is served not by one but six different airports. ME does not make sense at DLR.

On the flip side, since DLR caters to a different audience they have higher standards and you will find the rides and shows and parks maintained better - because DLR visitors tend not to visit in one week chunks but frequent day trips - and so they notice things more than the WDW visitors there only on occasion. And are vocal when standards drop.

Things like that. Why would anyone want DLR to be a carbon copy of WDW just on the west coast? The reason one goes is because it is different. When one sees differences they should embrace them and not be put off. Some of the differences are better. Some are worse. And some just depend on your perspective.

As a WDW local that just returned from Disneyland, the first bit of advice I'd give you is to relax a bit. In my opinion Disneyland is not nearly as stressful as a visit to WDW, and while yes some planning is helpful, it isn't as important. That's probably what I love most about DL. Everything is very compact, and if I want to have dinner at one of the hotels after a day at the park, I don't have to plan hours of time to accomplish this. In a nutshell, it's a laid back Disney vacation (for me anyway)...enjoy it:thumbsup2

thank you!

Hydroguy's WDW Vets Tips was the first thread I bookmarked! ;)

So if Fantasmic will only be the Saturday we are there, what is the best plan of attack for getting a good place to see it? After years of being among the hoards of 10000 in the Studios theater, I can't wait to see the DL version. How far in advance for a mid-Oct Sat? Where?

We've only ever been to the Christmas parties at WDW, never Halloween, but I was surprised to learn there is no parade. We're still planning on doing the party on that Friday night and are also considering the Happy Haunts tour possibly on Thursday night.

First order of business - thank you for putting together some awesome threads!

In terms of World of Color, we are flying in Wed. morning and are thinking of scheduling the earliest dinner seating at Ariel's Grotto that include the WoC seating (ok, standing), correct? What the earliest can you have dinner and still get those passes? Am I correct in reading that after that, we should start hanging out around the queuing area 90 minutes before the show?

Funny thing, we never did the dining plan, never used Magical Express, and never missed either. In a lot of ways, reading about DL, we seem sometimes to be a lot more DL speed than WDW. I LOVE the idea that we don't have to waste an hour hopping between parks on the bus system.

Add to that my DIS initials are DL and it would seem a perfect match :tilt:

Of the six airports, what are the advantages of each? We haven't started pinning down where to fly into yet.

thanks again!

This sounds AWESOME! :thanks:

If its in the budget you may want to try the desert priority seating for Fantasmic! It's $59 and gives you reserved seating for the show with a desert box and unlimited beverages. Otherwise if you want to SIT you'll have to stake out spots early. We prefer the light pole trick and standing for the show. (the light towers for the show raise up so initially it looks like a poor view with these big lights in front of you). Or if you want to see the fireworks too (it'll be Remèmber Dreams Come True....my favorite fireworks show) see the 2nd showing of F! It'll be less crowded. (side note you CAN see a good portion of the fireworks from the F! Viewing area but will miss the effects around the castle)

Here is a good starting point:

Of the six airports, what are the advantages of each? We haven't started pinning down where to fly into yet.

SNA (Orange County, aka John Wayne) is closest. It's also small enough to be easily navigated. Check there first, to see if your carrier flies there. Southwest is one of the carriers that does. Very, very convenient.

LGB (Long Beach) is just a little farther away than SNA. Also small, cozy, and easily navigated. Jet Blue flies to LGB, so check them.

LAX is the biggest, baddest airport in town. Most likely, if you don't get a good fare on Southwest or JetBlue, you'll find that the cheapest fares are into LAX. Frequently, you'll also find that you can do non-stop to LAX, but it might take one or more stops to get to SNA or LGB. For those reasons, LAX is frequently your best choice; but look for the other two first. It takes anywhere between an hour and forever to get from LAX to DLR, depending on traffic. If you fly into LAX, be very aware of rush hour. You don't want to be arriving at 4 or 5 PM, for example. Also, for your return, factor in that you may want to be at the airport up to 2 hours early, and figure out what that means in terms of getting there through rush hour.

Burbank and Ontario airports are probably nowhere in the running, unless you have a very special case.

HTH,
Bob

Yes to everything and I believe earliest dinner depends on when WOC shows on the night you want to go. You want AG reservations 3 hours before the show. See "World of Color Superthread" www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=37986447

SNA is the closest and most comfortable of the bunch.

DemonLlama - I am in the Denver area too. I would love to get together with you sometime to pick your brain about taking my little girl for the first time! I have been to Disneyland about a dozen times, but this will be her first time (as well as my DH's) and I really want to make sure it's special!

I'd be happy to! I wonder if anyone's ever organized a DIS Denver meet? There seem to be quite a few of us :)

I would have to agree that World of Color is not to be missed. We also love the Aladdin musical! And the whole "Space Mountain" experience is quite different from WDW, to DL's favor in my opinion.

Also, it's a bit easier to game the FastPass system, as the two parks are not connected so you can hold multiple FP's at one time. This can require some advanced planning, or if not, just a lot of running back and forth, but the time saved not having to stand in lines as long is worth it to me!

Search for a superthread about Halloween. It'll have pictures and reviews of the goings on for the season. A lot of it is included with park admission. The party allows for a special fireworks show (which is awesome in front of the castle or ROA) a character cavalcade (like a mini parade) and trick or treating. For me (a vet) I'm happy skipping the parade and trick or treating. I can see the fireworks from my hotel. The really cool stuff is the back of Frontierland, they have professional pumpkin carvers and the displays change almost weekly.

Wow, what deej696 said above may very well be the best advice you can get (aside from reading HydroGuy's Tips for WDW Vets, of course). Just relax, DL is very different from WDW. You do not need to stress over planning, it's so much more convenient and (in my opinion) "user friendly" than WDW.

We live in colorado too! We are taking our first trip in March of this year, staying 4 nights, 3.5 days! We are super stoked!! What airline are you flying ?? From DIA?

Since everyone is doing such a great job answering you, I just wanted to say hey. Nice seeing you over here. :)

We live north of DIA, and fly Southwest. We got a great deal for all 5 us for tinkerbell marathon weekend $822. We also found taking a cab (costs around $45) from SNA works great and easy.

Kara:woohoo:

We are watching both Frontier and Southwest, but it's so far out at this point, it'll be a while. We tend to be Southwest fliers, and since they fly between DIA and John Wayne (lol, I've forgotten the letters!) it'll mostly likely be SW.

I'm telling ya -- Denver DIS meet! :goodvibes
