A long shot here, but I was wondering if anybody has any info on what it takes to start an online school. Not necessarily with accreditation, but one where students could obtain loans in order to pay for tuition.

Not sure anyone has any info, but if you do, I'd love some direction to a helpful website, phone number or anything else. Not much comes up with my google searching. Thanks so much!!

I don't understand your question.

Are you looking for student loan information? That would not be an online school website but a loan/money website.

Are you looking to start your own school or for your kids to attend an online school?

I am sure if you clarify your question someone can help.

It's not for me actually. Someone I know wants to start an online school. He doesn't necessarily want to go through the accredidation process but would like students to be able to obtain loans for tuition.

He wants them to be able to obtain loans for tuition to go to HIS school. OH ... Interesting ... I have no idea how you would go about that. Doesn't sound like it would be remotely an easy process aside from how parents would pay for the school!

Yup, that's his "plan" :confused3. There are some loans available for unconventionial types of schooling/studies - like computer classes, etc. I did find some info, but there isn't much out there for unlicensed and unaccredited "schools".

Thanks.

There is virtually no way someone can acquire an educational loan for studies in an accredited or unlicensed "school." Is he really wanting to start a school or just be a "diploma" factory?

If he has a great idea for an online class and has the credentials to back it up, he can pitch the idea to university that does on line classes. He would get paid without the hassle of the other stuff.

What are his credentials?

Actually what I've found is that there are a few loans available for career coursework. Not federal, of course and most require you to start paying it back right away as opposed to after graduation.

I didn't mean to bash the guy at all. He's a programmer, IT type - very smart and very successful (if not somewhat idealistic). He'd like to try and give a hand to out of work people who can actually get an IT position after a course or two. I'm not sure what he plans to charge and he won't be offering certificates or diplomas, just educational courses in the computer field. Many of the leaders in the field don't have advanced degrees - they learn by fiddling so to speak. :)

Maybe, but it's hard to get hired without those certifications.

There are too many accredited places to go to that have something afterwards to show for the money they spend.

The students will need something more than, "I can teach you things, give me your money."

I am not intending to "bash" him, just offering one opinion in the millions out there.

If he wants people to attend his school & pay tuition, why does he care how they pay for it? Why do they have to have a loan. I'm still confused. :confused3

Places like prosper.com have investors who will loan money to online people. For anything as long as the investor wants to take the risk and the borrower agrees to the repayment terms.

Yeah, I guess it's similar to the Learning Annex in NYC. Bunch of supposedly educational seminars by people in the business you are trying to get into. They usually stink. I think he was hoping for something a little more professional than that but without the expense and time involved in becoming accredited.

Oh well, thanks to anyone who offered some info. I really don't have enough information to answer any of the other questions asked by some PPs.
