Starter Sewing Machine for 8-year old

Our kidlet has taken a distinct liking to sewing...something for which I have absolutely NO knowledge or talent! She has made several pillows by hand but would like to move on to more complex items.

Does anyone have advice about what kind of sewing machine we should get to start out?

Make sure the speeds are adjustable! My daughter's didn't have adjustable speeds, so we bought one that did for her little girl to learn on; that way, the original projects can be stitched slowly.

Awww, they do make sewing machines for kids. However, since she is 8 already I would go ahead and buy a simple adult machine. Perhaps pop into your local cloth store. They usually sell sewing machines & maybe they can explain it to you.
Of course I am not an expert either but their has to be something out there that is a real sewing machine but reasonably priced. Sounds like a great birthday or holiday gift to me.

I would check out Sears. I haven't looked at them in a while but I know that Kenmore models were usually pretty reasonably priced and the controls were far simpler to use and understand than some other models. Good luck.

I do sew, and I would go ahead and buy an adult machine. Maybe you can get one used to start?

I'm right there with you, Sweetpeasmom! I can barely sew on a button but it looks like my DD6 has inherited the sewing bug from her paternal grandmother. She very quickly escalated from those little sewing kits with plastic needles, yarn, and pre-made holes to real hand sewing with needle and thread. She's made several teddy bears with felt and button-eyes and a couple heart-shaped pillows.

We have a sewing machine but I can't teach her since I don't know how to use it!
