We're going to WDW for the first time in a couple of months, staying at the Poly, do you get given some pins when you check in? if not how do you get some pins in the first place to trade?

No.
They give you nothing:lmao:
You can buy starter sets everywhere on Disney property..
the most cost effective are the ones that have 7 pins for 30 bucks.
if cost is an issue..you can also go to a disney outlet.
assuming..it is not....
Almost every gift shop has starter sets...a lot of them..come with lanyards..
so..if trading is your primary concern...and..not buying pins to keep...
look for a starter set..with pins..you do not like..
that way...they will be easy for you to trade.;)

YEARS ago when you booked certain packages each family member received a pin at check in. They have not done it for a long time.

Check this seller out on ebay. I got a lot of 100 pins from this seller, and I have found several on the disney pins site for $7 or more. I only paid $71 roughly including shipping. I've found alot of good feedback on this seller and on the TGM boards.

lotzapinz is the ebay seller. Always has pins for sale in various sized lots. I just did a buy it now, because most of the auctions ended up being so close to the buy it now price, it wasn't worth wasting my time bidding.

Not to be rude, but this is poor advice. While the seller may have positive feedback ( which means they complete transactons in a satisfactory manner) it does not mean that the pins are authorized Disney pins. I would say that if you bought 100 pins for 71.00 (making them 0.71 each) then you received unauthorized products. In the pin trading world, those are called scrappers and/or fake pins.

Remember the old saying that if it seems too good to be true, then it probably isn't true!

I agree with Spiffie, this is bad advice. I'm sorry but the pins you will receive are more likely "scrappers" or fakes.
OP you can follow the link in my signature for assistance with eBay, the first page of the thread has a great list of good/bad and middle ground sellers, please feel free to ask us any questions you might have and please understand what scrappers are and how they influence the sport of pin trading. :) Good luck and I hope you have a great time trading!

Dont start your pin trading experience with scrapper or counterfeit pins. Buy real starter sets at the parks or at the Disney Outlets. We dont need to encourage new traders to take the easy/cheap route and continue to pollute lanyards in the parks with the garbage pins that come from dishonest ebay sellers. Just my opinion :).

We bought 200 pins from Ebay just before we went (only came back Tuesday) and we had no problems with trading, it worked out a lot better for us because all the pins in the starter sets our kids wanted to keep so didn't trade. We have bought sets from disney to keep, spending over $200 this time and keeping all of them.

We have traded fo3 weeks this summer and had no problems, just make sure you ask if they have the (c) Disney on the back before you bid/purchase

I do not think that you got the point.
That is why folks tell you not to buy bulk pins on ebay cheap...
as..99% of the time..they are fake.
It is not that you cannot trade them..as all the fakes have the Disney copyright..only that you should not..as trading fakes only pollutes the cast lanyards...with fakes.
So..all of yours..were traded for real pins...and..the fakes...are now given to someone else...who now has your fake pins...
hence the warnings..for not buying fakes.
unless you paid somewhat fair trade or so for them....you can be assured..they are not real.

So you bought fake pins and then traded them for real ones......this is EXACTLY what we are trying to eliminate. In the future please do your research before buying pins from eBay, you can still get 200 pins but your chances of having real ones will be higher if you use our eBay super thread.

Yikes! This is why I am so hesitant to trade with CMs from lanyards. Good advice, pixiewings71.

Maybe because I've been doing this for a long time, but if I see a pin on a CM lanyard that I like, I really don't care if it's "real" or not. I don't care that I'm trading a real pin for maybe something that's not.

Collect pins for the love of them because they won't make you rich (more likely poor) in the long run.

am i missing something? the pins are little pieces of metal, they have next to no real value, trading them is a way to pass a few minutes and like the pressed pennies is just a bit of fun.

As long as you get pins with your favourite characters does it matter if they are fakes so good you have to check them minutely to see the difference?

well, if that is the way that you 2 girls see it...
I am assuming you also buy pirated dvds, fake Uggs and faux coach bags....
and..you have no problem..paying the same price as the real thing for that...
..in that case,
I also have a nice bridge if you are in the market for one...
it connects to Manhattan..:lmao:

Scrapper pins are VERY much like MP3s. The owners of the IP want a ridiculous sum of money for them. Some poeple are stupid and think paying the same price as a CD to get low bitrate files that can't be copied to other devices is a great idea, others not so much.

Some people think one pin of Mickey holding a Vinylmation of Goofy wearing a lanyard of pins of lanyards full of pins (this was an ongoing joke on our trip) is much more valuable than another pin of Mickey... due to when it was made (Even if it was probably made on the exact same equipment). If you are keeping it sealed at home, that may be the case. If it's a little kid wearing them at a park, they don't give a damn.

You can try to explain to Jr that it's much better for him to only trade 4 "real" pins during the entire trip, because that's all he can afford. Or, he could trade 40 scrapper pins for other scrapper pins that he likes.

In my opinion, if you collect pins, buy real Disney ones (we do some). If you have a child wanting pins of cats and dogs and Pixar, and he couldn't care less if they're real, get scrappers off ebay. They wouldn't exist if Disney wasn't overcharging for them so much.

We never had a CM question the validity of pins. We did have one cranky one get upset that we had our son trade for a pin on a green (child only) lanyard for a pin my wife wanted.

I'd guess the vast majority of the pins my son came home with are scrappers, but he loves them. HE did score a few real ones, including a nice MVMCP dangle pin from last year (who the hell would trade it for a lanyard pin I don't know). I also got two cool HM ones that are labeled as LE 1250. They are big pins, almost certainly fake, but cool, and I'm glad I have them, and that I only paid fair scrapper price for them.

Thank You Curiouslittleoyster. :) To be honest tho, I get more scrappers from individuals then I do from CM's. :)

For some people it's not "just a piece of metal" or "just a pin", for some it's a way to remember their vacations and good times with their families. For others it's a way to remember someone that was important to them in the past. I'm not into pins for the $$ (altho yes I do sell some on eBay right now, because I lost my job in June and need to pay bills) I'm into pins because of the fun we had trading as a family in the parks but I still don't appreciate paying more for my pins and getting scrappers in trades. Scrappers are NOT right, the people selling them are NOT right, it needs to be stopped so we are doing our part here for it. :)
