Star Wars Weekends cancelled due to construction

Nooooooooooooooo!!!! It's not possible!!! Color me crushed.

I know. I'm SO glad we were able to go for the first time this year. Hopefully it will come back when the construction is done. It doesn't make sense that it wouldn't, considering all the stuff they're adding is Star Wars-centric.

Wouldn't be surprised to see them canceled for the next few years.

Sorta like the Festival of the Masters.

Wouldn't be surprised if they just don't do it ever again. Star Wars is going to have a very large presence in DHS in a few years. Then add in the season of the force events I very well think SWW could be gone forever.

I included a link to the Orlando Sentinel article.

Maybe the article is newer than the the Disney Parks Blog post.

It's a shame really. Yes there are new experiences. But for me it was so great to see the panels and meet those who worked on the series and the movies. The stormtrooper skits and the Hoopla which was gone after 2013.

Im putting on my flame retardant suit. But Im kind of glad it's going away. For me I don't mind star wars but I don't need to go and see the guy who was the third key grip in the third movie when his brother called in sick and get his autograph. I love going to WDW in May, the weather is great, mothers day flower and garden. I don't love the crowds that come with Star Wars weekends and we try to leave as it starts.
Im sure it will come back in some capacity once construction is completed but for now it's not a horrible thing that its going away for a bit. Flame me if you like, I loved Star Wars when I was 5 ( the original release) I asked to be called Princess Leia for like a year but there is only so much of it I can take.

I kind of agree with SaraMc and I'm a huge Star Wars fan, have been to SWW twice and while they were fun, it was one day out of a 7 day trip.

What I did enjoy most from last years event was the fireworks and I fully expect when all the construction is done that while SWW may not come back, we will see some kind of periodic hard ticket event featuring special shows, fireworks, concerts, etc..

We have been going to two of the weekend events for the past several years and DS and I loved it. It was a great experience. We did the Deluxe events as well and really enjoyed those as well. We are really going to miss our annual start of the Summer trips.

If this is what you think is there then I agree you wouldn't enjoy. There were only a couple of folks there doing autographs each week and they were legit stars. SWW was only Friday, Saturday & Sunday so very easy to travel to Disney and completely avoid the event. No reason for non-SWW fans to be bothered by it at all. I went for years and never had any awareness of the event except for some Meet & Greet backdrops sitting around the park during the weekdays.

PS - I do enjoy SWW, but am not a huge fan, have only seen the first movie (the night it came out) but my kids are and I've had great fun with the happenings in DHS during that time of year.

I agree with you, it will come back in some capacity. People are talking like Disney just blew up a planet, when what they're doing is actually building an entire Star Wars land. There will be some sort of party thing when they are done. This is an interim measure... construction is used as the reason, when really it's because they had to get rid of this... they can do so much more with Star Wars. Maybe it will be a hard-ticket party event like MVMCP or MNSSHP. Maybe it'll be VIP like Feel the Force. Maybe it'll be public like F&W or F&G. But they'll do something. More stuff year round, big rides, big theming, and many things that we simply do not know yet, and will not know till much later, since Disney will keep them secret till the last possible moment.

I loved SWW that we did for my 2nd trip to WDW and I have been hoping for one more for years. I have been hoping to had a chance to follow Bawb's advice on where to take the best pictures (2007 Nov/Dec). I hope that the change in the parks/new experiences will be awesome.

The "stars" from the movies that come to the events are nothing like what you are describing. Regarding crowds, we did not find HS attractions impacted while we were there for SWW. The SW events were busy, but the impact on the rest of the rest park was minimal.

Think of all who booked in preparation of the weekends! Ouch!
That would be us. I guess they just found out that they were going to have construction going on in the park? We will still have a fund trip, but I am getting frustrated with Disney continuing to decrease shows, park hours, etc. and continue to raise prices.

We have been getting annual passes every other year and get in several trips during that 12 months. We were planning on a SWW trip at the begin and end of our annual pass. Now we will just be getting regular tickets and we will pass on the Christmas, Spring Break, and next June trips and spend our time and money elsewhere.
