Well, we all knew what the ending was going to be. In much the same way we all knew that “Titanic” would have to sink, at the end of Revenge of the Sith, Anakin would become Darth Vader. There are other comparisons that can be drawn between the two films; both had huge budgets, both had fantastic effects and the central theme to both is a love interest. When I look back at the Star Wars series as a whole, love plays a major part in all of them.

While I would agree that the love story did tend to drag in the previous instalment, it is absolutely vital in Episode III. Anakin’s turn from the Jedi to the Sith was always going to be a complicated and difficult affair. After all, the audience needed to know the history behind the infamous Darth Vader statement: “No. I am your father.”. While Christensen and Portman are never going to win awards for their performances, they did portray the emotional turmoil that surrounded them very well. In fact, I have to congratulate Christensen on his overall performance. He had to flick from being mean, moody and aggressive to kind, loving and thoughtful, changes he carried well. The anguish of a young man being torn in different directions was, in my opinion, clear to see.

So we all know where the story has to go and getting to the conclusion is emotional. The “Order 66” scenes are the first time that a Sci-Fi movie has brought me to tears. It really is sad to see Anakin become an apprentice of the dark side and to learn the fate of the Jedi. The ‘Night of the Long Knives” or the slaying of Julius Ceaser is a tea party compared to the level of atrocity committed during these scenes. But, it needed to happen for the story lines to be brought together tying in the end of this trilogy with the start of the next.

The battle scenes in this film are more lavish than anything seen previously, although I was disappointed with the final battle between Anakin and Obi Wan. It lacked a certain something that the battles between Luke and Vader or Obi Wan/Qui Gon against Darth Maul had. I can’t say why, it just didn’t feel right. The space battles are immense, somewhat messy affairs and you have no idea who is winning or losing but I guess that is the nature of war. You can certainly see the monetary value of the film as the effects are breathtaking.

The film isn’t without fault, trying to inject humour into robots doesn’t work. Neither does R2-D2’s sudden ability to fly and beat other robots in combat fit in with the normal story. And of course, there are those that ridicule the dialogue and whilst some of it is questionable, there is no doubt that it works. Overall the way Lucas has managed to tell this, or should that be HIS, emotional story is executed brilliantly. I had a very strange feeling as the end credits rolled. It was like witnessing the birth of my last child and knowing that I wouldn’t be having anymore; that I wouldn’t be able to look forward to the same kind of thing again. However, the circle is complete and on my way home I wanted to get out Episode IV and begin watching A New Hope, working my way through to Anakin’s redemption and the demise of The Emperor.

On a final note, this film has been classified as a 12A so children can see it as long as they are accompanied by an adult. There are scenes within the film that I’d be wary about my children (aged 6, 8 & 10) viewing. “Order 66” and Anakin’s (forced) transformation to become Darth Vader are fairly grim affairs and I would encourage a parent to see the film before taking their children.

Whilst I can't wait to see it, I can't help feeling that, no matter how good it is (and I'm sure it will be), I'm going to feel a huge sense of disappointment. I like happy endings!

Good review without spoilers.

Cheers

That's a great review AndRu, thank you!

My DH is a huge Star Wars fan and I can;t wait for this film to be out of the way  Please, please, please Mr Lucas do not release any more!!!

I can't beleive R2D2 flies, how ridiculous.

I enjoy Episodes IV, V & VI but to be honest I found I & II a complete waste of time. Actually, I have never seen all of I. I have always fallen asleep before the end :teeth:

I saw the film on Thursday with my DS (12) and we both enjoyed it. I think it is fair to say there are no surprises in the film. It can be compared to completing a jigsaw and the final piece missing shows some blue sky!!

That said, I remember seeing the Welsh premier of Episode IV in Cardiff in 1977 and I was just as excited then as I was two days ago.

Finally, I heard George Lucas say in a radio interview last week that he can now concentrate on Indianna Jones part IV.

oooh Indiana Jones!! Hurrah!

I saw the film last night and was fighting tears for much of it, I heard several people around me who lost their battles with tears. Fantastic film but I'd agree that some scenes are very horrific and I struggled to watch some despite being a fan of films like Scream and Reservoir Dogs. I think if it hadn't been a Star Wars film it would most likely be a 15 certificate.

Felt very sad leaving the cinema, the end of an era...

I went to see it on Friday, having refrained from watching the copy I downloaded the day before. I really enjoyed it, and I think Lucas has redeemed himself after the dreadful episode 1 and only a little better episode 2.
Episode 3 does indeed plug pretty much all the gaps, and complete the story.

My only gripes are once again Lucus' attempts at humour...such as the battle droids saying "oh-ohh" in a high pitch voice before they get sliced in 2, it becomes really anoying after the first one.
Also, Vader at the end saying "Nooooooooooooooo" was a bit odd, it reminded me of Homer Simpson.

Ds 2 age 17 has just crawled out of his pit (after a late showing) and he thought it was awesome!!

We went to see this last night and we all thought it was brilliant.
Some parts were a little bit corny!! Still a great film though:)

Saw it on Saturday and thought it was tons and tons better than the first two! Very fast paced, lots of elements of the story brought together and for the first time with the prequels, it FELT like a Star Wars film.

Acting was dubious sometimes and the dialogue as corny as ever (but then the original 3 suffered from that, so no harm done :teeth: ) but still very enjoyable.

Wouldnt recommend you take under 10s to see it though - it is quite shockingly gruesome in parts.

As someone else said there was this terrible feeling of waiting for the connections to be tied up a bit like watching a series in reverse order. That said i really enjoyed it and cant wait to buy the wlhoe set on dvd ( I have been waiting)

I took my dd and a couple of her friends to watch it on Monday, they enjoyed it but I must have had to answer 100+ questions on the way home.

Daughter - Star wars was the first film ?

Me - Yes, but it is actually the 4th film

Daughter - How can the 1st film be the 4th film?

Me - The film we saw today was a prequel

Daughter - whats a prequel?

Me - Tried to explain the difference between sequel and prequel.

Daughter - But Star Wars was the 1st film?

Me - Yes but

Daughter - I don't get it

Olivia - I don't get it

Georgie - How does Anakin walk around with no legs?

Help

This lasted all of the way home, 25miles

Then we got home

Daughter - Can we watch the 1st star wars?

Me - I put the original dvd on.

Daughter - You said that was the 4th one

Me - Passed all dvd's to her, now watch what you like I need a :drinking1

:rotfl: I've had exactly the same conversations Mark. 'But how can episode four be the first one??' Try getting out of that...

I really enjoyed the new film. Some of the dialogue was just painful, and I did know what was going to happen from the beginning, but it was a lot of fun. It had Jedi and lightsabres and all the music, and that's all I need!

I came out of it with a desperate urge to watch Episode IV too!

OOOH! my brain hurts after reading that Mark LOL! I've forgotten what it's like to have them that age, it seems so long ago. DS1 is 20 and DS2 is 17.
I'll wait for the DVD to come out.
25 miles to go to the pictures is bad, we complain at 3.

3 days to Sequoia Lodge DLRP ( just DW  and me) for 5 days

I saw episode 3 on saturday.I had high hopes for this film and was really looking forward to seeing this. The end is brillant,it links episode 3 and 4 perfectly. The Obi-wan and anakin duel I found a bit of a let down,it was overwelmed by all the lava special effects.(I thought the obi-wan/anakin vs Dooku duel was better.)
Ian McDiarmid was brillant as Palpatine,I also thought Samuel L. Jackson(Mace Windu) and Jimmy Smits(Bail Organa) played their parts well.
I found Hayden Christensen a little unconvincing,Natalie Portman was very good.
The Best part of the film was the Order 66 scences, were the jedi get wiped out.I came out of the cinema disappointed,I guess i was expecting a little bit more.

Thanks andRu for the great review!

Jon

After the last two films, I was a bit worried about this one, but I needn't have worried, cos I loved it. Like everyone says it links episodes 3 & 4 nicely, now all I want to do is watch episode 4 again.
