I don't think I like it. What if one of the Vulcan's that was killed when the planet was destroyed was the person that introduced Picard's parents. Now, they have never met. Now there is no Jean Luc Picard.
It kind of feels like tossing all of that history in the trash.
I have felt that way since Rick Berman took over as executive producer after Gene Roddenbery died and had drastically changed the optimistic future vision that Roddenbery invented, that was so key to the Original Series and TNG.
DS9 was all bickering and "conflict." Like Berman read how drama is conflict in Drama 101, and thought he should create a ST whole series based on bickering and conflict.
Then he destroyed the Enterprise D, and that's when I really felt Berman was out to destroy most of not ALL that Roddenbery had built. Thewn he killed Kirk off - and in such a lame way.
Even Majel Barrett, Roddenbery's widow had made protests as to the directions Berman was taking ST.
When
Enterprise, the TV series came out, I wanted to like it, but with Scott Bakula at the helm, I knew the show was doomed for failure - and so it was.
I loved Bakula in
Quantum Leap. But, even HE admitted he couldn't see himself as a starship captain. I always felt he was glib in the role because of it, especially the way he said, "You can't be afraid of the wind, Ensign." Oh PUH-LEASE!
Now, if Picard, Kirk, Sisco or Janeway had said that exact same line instead, the series would still be going strong.
Because of it, I can no longer see Bakula in
anything anymore.

He ruined it for me, that I can't watch him anymore. All I see is a glib, bad actor.
As for the
Star Trek, movie we are talking about, I also see it as a re-booting. While I wish they had kept Vulcan, (another destruction by Berman,) I do see that this alternate time line may give the franchise new energy & stories.
