Star Tours question

When my husband and I went to Disney World in December all my husband could talk about was riding on the new Star Tours(we missed it by a week on a trip in May). When we finally got to ride it, he was chosen to be the rebel spy. My question is it the rebel spy randomly chosen or is there actually a CM that picks. The reason for this is because my husband is a heavily bearded man and looks like I imagine a rebel spy would. Either way he still thought it was the coolest thing ever, but it would seem more special if he was picked by an actual person.

It must be a random thing, because my 13 year old niece was the rebel spy when we were there in December, and she's one of the most innocent, harmless looking girls I know:rotfl:

from what I've noticed is that the CMs push a button to pick the spy. It's still really random but they do pick.

I'm thinking it must be random. I was on a fairly empty ride (maybe 10 people), and the spy shown to us was an actual Star Wars alien, not any of the riders. I thought with fewer people, you'd have a greater chance of being picked, but it seemed like it picked an empty seat and used a stock image for the spy.

My 68 year old mom got picked and is was GREAT. We were on a VIP tour at the time and our guide shared with me that the CMs pick a random guest.

I thought it was a specific seat because this past December I rode it twice and the rebel spy was in the same seat both times. I'm happy to know that it's actually random...this gives my fiance a better chance of being picked!!:ewok:

I was wondering if you can still go through the ride without the gimble?

There's no specific seat, CM pick an image from all the faces before you put on your "Flight Glasses"

I noticed that right before the CM leaves and tells you to have a good flight, they open a panel on the left side and seem to click something. Of course that could be a ruse but I just figured that was them picking a spy. We went on about ten times and I started to noticed that about the third time.

It did seem that the people picked were in the first two or three rows each time. It would be fun to be picked. I don't think they are looking for any specific type of person though, since I saw little kids and adults chosen on the times I took the ride.

The times I rode it last summer, the people were in the last couple of rows -- so just the opposite! My biggest regret . . . my DH was chosen, but I missed it because I was too busy calming down my SIL who gets motion sickness. At least he and the kids saw him.

That panel shows all the seat belt connections, whether they are buckled or not, green/red. It is always checked by the CM before leaving and starting the ride. If a red light appears, it lets them know belt/s is/are not secured, and which one/s so it can be corrected.

I was chosen to be the Rebel Spy during our December visit. I was sitting on the end in one of the back rows, and it totally made my day! I still grin when I think about it... :)

LOL I'm so glad you asked this question. DGrD just announced that she wants to ride until she's picked as the spy (suddenly she's hit the Star Wars obsessed age). She noticed that both times we rode in oct the spy was sitting in the back row. Maybe now I can convince her that's not necessarily true. Looks like I need to chat up the CM or I could end up spending a LOT of time on Star Tours this trip.;)

This question is off topic but that last time I rode Star Tours was in May 2008 before it was re-done. My question is it still very herky jerky? I nearly lost my lunch on it and have never rode it again. That being said I would like to give it another try as long as its not so rough!

Hi all,

I just came back from a trip from Disney last week. I rode star tours 4 times throughout the trip, and the last time I was chosen as the spy. I was sitting in the 2nd row and the 2nd seat from the entrance. What made it extra special was this was also the only time I got to see the Darth Vader sequence, and he wanted me!!! I will always remember him using force powers to grab the ship saying "I WANT THAT REBEL SPY!!!"

I am 99% sure the CM chooses the rebel spy. Why? Well, we were in Disney just over a week ago, and as we rode Star Tours for a final time, the CM at our ship gasped and got really excited about the pins on my backpack, which were the Dharma Initiative stations from LOST (I'm a LOST fanatic). I got really excited that he knew what they were because everyone who'd seen them on the trip and noticed them asked me what they were from/had no idea what they were.

DH and I chatted with him for a bit, then loaded onto our ship, happy to have had a nice chat with a nice CM who understood my love for LOST. :rotfl: Next thing I know, my face is plastered on the screen, because yup, I WAS THE REBEL SPY!

We laughed so hard and it seriously made my trip that more special. I'm pretty sure that the CM I chatted with chose me because of our conversation. :) It was a great experience and something I'll never forget!

I was on it for the first time last weekend and it was one of the smoothest simulators I have ever been on. Great theming too! The humor makes it great.

Actually its randomly chosen, but is you notice they always choose someone who doesnt have the 3d glasses on yet.. so if you want to be the rebel spy keep your glasses off..
our last trip two of my 5 kids got chances to be the rebel spy.. my six year old daughter was so thrilled it was adorable..

Last weekend, my friend got picked. We were in the center of the back row.
