I have done a standard view at the DLH several times. The first time we got the parking lot view in the Bonita (now called Wonder). It was not a great view. Next time we got that same tower but on the other side and we had a view of the wedding pavillion, DL, some mountains and Downtown L.A. Very cool view. We were pretty high up which was also nice. Next time we were on that same side, but lower and could hear the fountains when we had the window open, again, a very nice view. The next two times we were in the Sierra (Dreams) Tower. Both times we were on the second floor, once facing the pool (a bit noisy but not bad as long as the window was closed) the next time facing DTD. From that one, we could actually see some of the fireworks. And last but not least, we have been in the Magic Tower facing the Mickey statue and parking lot with a very good view of the fireworks. The other side of that tower is the only one I have not been in personally, but my brother was and from his room I could see the pool and the Wonder Tower. So I'd call that side, on any floor another good one to get.
So out of all those times, the only "bad" view we had was that first one facing the parking lot. It was our first trip so I didn't care!
When you check in, ask where they are putting you. If they say the backside of the Wonder, ask nicely to be moved to any other side. Because I have been in all those towers and there are what, like six sides total, and only one of them is what I'd call a bad view. The rest you may not see a lot, but you'll see something besides a parking lot. Your odds are good of getting something decent.
And for the record, the Wonder Tower (Bonita) is my favorite tower if you can get he side facing the Koi Pond. I love walking through those fountains at night! And I may be wrong, but I want to say that whole tower is standard view rooms.
