Standard View 1 Bedroom Requests

Does anyone have a suggestion of what to request for a standard view 1 bedroom at the Boardwalk to be close to the elevators. I am having knee surgery 5 weeks before we go and I want to minimize walking in those long hallways! Are the standard views generally located any closer/farther from the elevators compared to other views? What will I be looking at, a parking lot? Any help or suggestions would be great!

You can ask to be close to the elevators, but of course, that will only be a request and no guarantee. The standard view rooms are spread out just like the others. The views are fine, IMO - you will see the front drive and possibly the parking lot, but all is beautifully landscaped. You might try and ask for the first floor - we stayed one time on the first level, and didn't need elevators at all to walk out to the bus stop, pool and boardwalk areas (the lobby is on the second level). This was a great location because we had young kids and strollers. Some of the higher floors have better views of Illuminations fireworks, though. We enjoyed the view of the ducks walking by our patio.
If you do stay far down the hallway, you can exit through stairs at different points in the building, but this might not work with your knee.

If you speak with the person you are making reservations for, they may put it in as a "medical reason" request and you will be more likely to get the request. I would think that knee surgery will fall into "medical request"

this is more to help you walk than for you to sit in - although you might need it for that too on occasional.

there are some standard views right next to the elevators - we generally end up about 3 to 6 doors down from the elevators.

I will call back and see if I can have "close to the elevators" as a medical request, thanks for that tip. We already have non-smoking for med. reasons noted for my daughter's asthma, we are going to seem like a real pain!

Would this be a preferred view? I really, really liked that view, but I assume it was preferred but if we could get that view, only close to the elevators that would be great!

Yes!!! Great mention, spicycat!!! Forgot to mention the W/C's .... AND.... Don't forget to get one when you go to the parks. You may be okay to walk while holding on to the w/c for awhile BUT just 5 weeks after the surgery, you may need to sit and it's better to get it before you're in pain and have to backtrack to the front of the park for a w/c.. Have fun on your trip.

That would be a preferred view. Any of the views along the canal are preferred views, including the one you describe or any of the pools & canal. For the most part, Standard View rooms are along the drive leading up to the check-in parking.

I would arrange for a wheelchair or an ECV (preferred) BEFORE you get to WDW. My DH had knee surgery 5 months before our trip last year and really needed that ECV at times. The walk from your room to the elevators will be nothing compared to the walking around the parks. There is no point ruining your vacation because you are in pain. You may not need it all the time (DH didn't) but you will almost certainly need it some of the time.

You should be find 5 weeks after surgery, back to work after 3 weeks with no restriction for most. Good luck and have a great vacation.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I called MS back and had close to the elevators noted as a medical request. We are going on this trip so DH can rum the WDW marathon and we are really not planning on going to the parks. Since we will be at the Boardwalk and we have AP's we may go over to Epcot or MGM for dinner or fireworks, but really we will have very minimal park time. I still think a wheelchair may be a good idea, just in case. Sometimes all the walking at WDW is hard for me now even before the surgery. Do I just go to Bell Services and ask for one? Can that just be used at the hotel and then I need to rent one when we go to the parks? Thanks!

You can ask at the front desk. They are first come, first served, so there is no guarantee they will have one or that they will have one that meets your needs (for example, they may have only wide chairs when you need a narrow one). If they don't have one , they will try to get one from another resort. People have reported in the past that it took anywhere from a few minutes to a few days.
Most of the time, people are allowed to bring the borrowed resort wheelchair to the parks (pretty much signed out to you for your whole trip), but a few people have written that they were told the wheelchair could be only used in the resort are.
I'd suggest taking along the phone numbers for some of the off-site rental companies in case you are unlucky and can't get a wheelchair. There is a list of companies that DIS posters have reported using in the disABILITIES FAQs thread near the top of the disABILITIES BOARD>.

yes, just ask bell services for one.

you can take their wheelchair any where on WDW property.

the buses are designed to allow for wheelchairs - or you can fold it up and have your husband (those things are heavy) bring it up the steps on the bus.

your choice. if you go to DD, MK, AK... or the member meet over at SSR.

Standard view has a view of the stream that goes under the bridge near the parking lot. but it is not even close to the elevators....

you will need the elevators or you could get a first floor room....

remember first floor at BWV is not the lobby floor.
