We have a jet blue 10:55 flight out of Boston with a layover in D.C. Before landing in Orlando at 3:23. The flight prior to ours leaves at 10:12 and is direct. I called Jet Blue today and they said we can go on standby for that flight at. No cost. When will we know if we can get on that flight? At check in or the time of boarding. Can they tell us if they can get seats together? Thanks

You wouldn't know until just before the flight. Although you can ask how full the flight is earlier and that can give you a good idea if you will get seats.

FYI, a direct flight can have a stop. You are confusing a direct flight with a
non-stop flight.

No, they can't tell you in advance if you'll get on the flight or if you will be able to sit together. Plan on this not happening, then you'll be pleasantly surprised if it does and prepared if it doesn't.

Standby Travel

Pre-Flight

Standby travel is based on seat availability and is not guaranteed.
In order to travel standby, you must have already purchased a seat on JetBlue.
There is no additional charge for this option.
You may list standby at the airport prior to your original flight. Standby travel cannot be done over the phone.
You must travel between the same city pairs (i.e. You can be confirmed on a nonstop and travel standby on a connecting flight or vice versa as long as the origin and destination cities remain the same).
If you have an Even More® Space seat and choose to travel standby, you will forfeit the seat fee and not be eligible for a refund.

Standby Options:
You may list for standby one flight prior to your confirmed scheduled departure.
Customers in cities with multiple flights can travel standby ONLY on the same day.
If traveling out of a city with only one daily flight, the Airport can list you standby on the last flight one day prior. Note that the flight prior to your confirmed flight may be a nonstop or a connecting flight.
If the flight option does not meet your needs (i.e. You are confirmed on a nonstop and the flight prior is a connecting flight, which you rather not travel on or the traveler is an Unaccompanied Minor that cannot fly on a connecting flight), JetBlue does offer a Same Day Change for a minimal fee. This option would confirm you on the flight of choice and can be requested at the Airport or by calling 1-800-JETBLUE (538-2583). There would need to be availability on the flight selected but there would be no increase in fare.
Please note that to LIST standby only one person per PNR is needed at the airport. However, to CHECK IN each individual must be present.

Same Day Flight Change

Cities with Multiple Flights a Day
You must contact JetBlue prior to the departure of your original flight
You can make your confirmed same day changes via 1-800-JETBLUE (538-2583) or at the airport beginning at midnight (in the time zone of the departing flight) of the same calendar day as your original scheduled flight.
You must travel on an earlier or later flight the same-day.
You must travel between the same city pairs or designated co-located airport.
A Same-Day Change Fee of $50 per person will be applied for your confirmed seat.

Cities with One Flight a Day
The same-day change program is not available for cities with one flight a day.

If we choose same day flight change but the only thing available is the Extra Leg room will we be charged the $50 fee plus $30 for each seat?

Yes to both. Each passenger/ticket is a separate transaction or seat. Each person utilizing Same Day Change would be assessed that fee, and each passenger reserving an Even More Legroom seat pays that surcharge as well. If you don't pay for Extra Legroom Seats, you don't get assigned to them.

I have arrived at Logan, for my JB flight, a little bit more than 2 hrs prior to my flight departure. When my friend and I checked our bags, the JB employee asked us if we wanted to get on an earlier flight. Heck yeah! We were put on a flight leaving about 90 mins prior to our original flight!!! I hadn't booked that one simply because it was a little bit more money when I first booked. Sure was nice getting to MCO earlier than expected!!!

At check-in, wouldn't there be an option to upgrade to Even More Legroom seats if they are available? For the $30 fee of course.

If there are any available, sure. But the question was whether one would have to pay both the Same Day Change fee and the Extra Legroom charge, if those were the only seats available. So, yes, both charges would be assessed.

Flying "standby" means just that. You stand by to get A seat at the end of boarding. Sometimes they will confirm you but regardless you are getting the open seats. So most often you won't be seated together. (Standby seats tend I be middle seats :). )
