Stamping/Embossing Questions...

Last night I was playing around with a fireworks stamp I have. I used a watermark pad to "ink" the stamp, stamped it on some paper, then sprinkled glitter on it. I covered that with clear embossing powder and embossed it, thinking that might seal the glitter a bit, but it didn't. So here are my questions:

Is there an embossing powder available that looks like glitter? And if so, what is it called and where can I get it?

Is there some sort of sealant that I could use on the glitter to keep it from coming off the page?

How do I keep from getting the edges of the stamp on my paper when stamping? Do you wipe the edges first before you stamp? Am I applying too much pressure when I stamp?

What I want to do is take some black cardstock, stamp it w/the fireworks stamp and use it for a l/o for Wishes but I don't want the glitter to come off.

I know SU has some embossing powder that is all sparkley. Then you heat set that to stay.

Do you have a thin glue pen? I guess you could draw on the stamped image with the glue and then glitter it.

What about just finding some of the metallic ink to stamp with on black paper and using the gel metallic pens to add a little extra were needed?

The one I used for the glitter look is embossing powder holographic by Ranger.
I got it at ACMoore, it's white in the jar but has sparkles in it. If you heat it for different lengths of time the color will change too. It started out green for me then went to bronze, then a bluish purple, then dark purple then burnt. I was just messing with it so it didn't ruin anything.

#1 and #3 are both with just the holographic powder and #4 the outside heart has the holographic. The colors in my notes are the color inks I used. I ended up using the black ink just because I liked the bronzy color it turned.

Oh and I would say you are using to much pressure and maybe rocking the stamp to much if you are getting an edge of ink outside of your image.

Instead of putting the stamp onto the inkpad that's sitting on the table, try turning things upside down....hold the stamp so that the rubber side is up & rub the inkpad over it. I find I'm far less likely to get ink on the edges that way - and if there's no ink on the edge you can't get an image on the paper.

Another thing that's even better...get brush markers. I have a bunch of Zig "Scroll & Brush" pens that are great! It's tough with a regular wide tip pen, though, because it takes too long to get good coverage. I have a VersaMark pen, but it doesn't work too well to ink the stamps for the same reason. Regular tips are too small & hard. The brush pens are nice & flexible. They kind of look like a wet paintbrush - and the tip is long. (They're nice also because you can use several colors on the same stamp w/o stamping twice.)

I have a glittery embossing power (heat set) that I bought at my stamping store.... makes pretty snowflakes on Christmas cards. so it is out there

AlexWyattMommy- I didn't realize ink pads came in metalics- I'll be checking that out! I had thought about the glue, but was afraid it might mess up the stamp.


piratesmate- I have tried the upside down trick and still manage to get ink on the edges. Maybe I need more practice? I usually keep a damp paper towel or a wipe nearby to clean it up a bit before stamping and was looking to eliminate that step. The brush markers sound kinda cool- I believe I've seen them before.


BernardandMissBianca- that's the effect I'm after. Your examples are cool! I'll have to check J's, HL, or M's for it (no ACM around here). I could also check Archivers. And you're right- I could be putting too much pressure on the stamp also.


Faerie- unfortunately, I don't have a stamping store (that I know of) around here. I hope to find it at a B&M store or online. Your snowflakes have given me another idea...


Oh, I have done some stamping using things around the house. Instead of ink, I used acrylic paint. There was some project I did with DS when he was in K and we used pencil erasers. I did a dalmation costume for him, using a potato to stamp on a white sweat outfit. I did sort of the same thing for a dalmation t-shirt for myself for MNSSHP while at the World, only that time I used marshmallows (I didn't get it done before we left) for the stamp.

I use make up wedges or kitchen sponges with my ink pads at least as much as I use stamps. They give the paper a colored edge that really makes it stand out. You can also just rub the edge of the paper directly against the ink pad.

Stampin-Up sells a little thing called an embossing buddy and what it actually is, is a bag of chalk that you pat on your paper first, then ink your stamp with the embossing ink, then sprinkle your powder on and tap off, this way you get a clear image with no smudges or flyaway powder on your page. You then heat set and you have a nice embossed look! Very clean and professional looking. I love my embossing buddy and would not emboss without it!!!! I've got a few different kinds of glittery embossing powder - I've purchased it through Close To My Heart, scrapbooks.com, and at my local Joannes store. I would think that maybe Michaels or AC Moore would have something similar?

As far as getting the edges around the side, it might be the stamp you are using. Some rubber stamps are not etched very deeply, and no matter how gentle you "stamp" them on the paper you will get excess ink on your paper. Look at your stamp before putting it to paper, and wipe the ink that is on the edges off. I usually just use my fingers, but you could use a paper towel or a tissue. Remember when you stamp that you want to stamp straight down - no rocking.

I could never find an embossing buddy where I live, so I made my own with a baby sock and baby powder. Put a fair amount of powder in sock, tie it shut, and wipe the sock on the paper you want to stamp and emboss. Got the idea from DIY!
